Ezekiel 32

Bible

The scene opens

Picture the prophet standing still on a specific day: twelfth year, twelfth month, first of the month. Ezekiel does not sing a hymn. He sings a funeral song, and the corpse he mourns is still breathing. Pharaoh, the man on the throne along the Nile, is told he looks like a young lion but is actually a river monster, thrashing about, muddying the waters with his own feet. And then the vision tilts. God says: I will haul you out of your river with a net, like fishermen dragging up a crocodile, and I will fling you on dry land where the vultures come. The valleys will be filled with your bulk. The sun will go dark over you. Kings will tremble.

Insights, prayers and thanksgivings from readers and the editorial team on this passage.

Insight Editorial on verse 19

Whom do you pass in beauty? Go down, and be laid with the uncircumcised." The question has no answer, and that is the point. Pharaoh had monuments, armies, a name that outshone the nations, and still the grave laid him down beside the very men he looked past. What are you counting on to set you apart? Only mercy keeps.

Prayer Editorial on verse 23

Father, when I read of nations laid low, their strength silenced in the grave, I feel the weight of how small we really are. Teach me to walk humbly, to fear violence more than I fear obscurity, and to build my life on you alone.
