The Explanation

One day God called out, "Abraham!" And Abraham answered, "Here I am." God said something that must have taken his breath away. "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love. Go to the mountains of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering."

Abraham did not argue. Early the next morning, he saddled his donkey, split the wood, and set off with Isaac and two servants. For three long days they walked. On the third day, Abraham saw the mountain far away.

He told the servants to stay behind. "The boy and I will go worship. We will come back to you," he said. Did Abraham believe that? He put the wood on Isaac's shoulders and carried the fire and the knife himself. They walked on together.

Then Isaac asked a question that must have felt like a knife itself. "My father? Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb?" Abraham answered, "God will provide himself the lamb, my son." They kept walking, together.

At the place, Abraham built the altar, laid the wood, and tied Isaac on top of it. He lifted the knife. Right then, an angel called from heaven, "Abraham, Abraham! Don't touch the boy! Now I know you fear God, because you did not hold back your only son from me."

Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the bushes by its horns. He took the ram and offered it instead of Isaac. Abraham named that place "Yahweh Will Provide."

What Does This Mean?

This is one of the hardest stories in the whole Bible. God asked Abraham to give up the son he loved most, the son he had waited a hundred years for. It was a test. Would Abraham trust God even when he did not understand him?

Abraham obeyed, step by step, without knowing how the story would end. But God never wanted Isaac to die. God wanted to see if Abraham trusted him more than anything else in the world, even more than his own son. And right when it mattered most, God stopped him and gave a ram instead.

The Common Thread

Do you notice the words Abraham says to Isaac? "God will provide himself the lamb." Abraham did not know how true that was. Many years later, God would give another Son, his only Son, whom he loved, to die on a mountain near that same place. But this time, nobody stopped the knife. Jesus was the Lamb God provided, for us.

For You

Sometimes God asks you to trust him even when you do not understand why. Maybe you are scared, or something feels too hard. You can remember Abraham walking up that mountain, not knowing what would happen, but trusting that God saw further than he could. You can also remember that God gave his own Son for you. That is how much he loves you.
