John 14

The Explanation

Jesus was sitting with his friends, and he knew something big was coming. Soon he would leave them. Their hearts were already starting to feel scared and sad.

So Jesus said something warm and strong. "Don't let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me." He told them he was going to his Father's house, a house with many homes, and he was going ahead to make a place ready for them. Then he promised he would come back to get them.

Thomas did not understand. "Lord, we don't know where you are going," he said. "How can we know the way?" Jesus answered with words that still echo today. "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me."

Philip also had a question. "Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us." Jesus looked at his friend, a man he had walked with for a long time, and said, "Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father."

Jesus kept talking. He promised his friends would not be left alone like orphans. He would send a Helper, the Spirit of truth, who would live inside them and remind them of everything Jesus had said. And then he gave them a gift words could hardly hold. "Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Don't let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful."

What Does This Mean?

Imagine your father has to go on a long journey, but before he leaves he says, "I am building you a home, and I will come back for you myself." Would that make the goodbye easier? That is what Jesus was doing for his friends. He was not abandoning them. He was preparing something and promising to return.

Jesus also said something very bold. He did not just say he would show the way to God. He said, "I am the way." Like a door does not just point to a room, it lets you walk through. Jesus is the door to the Father.

The Common Thread

From the very beginning God wanted to live close to people, walking with Adam in the garden, meeting Moses at the mountain. But sin builds a wall between people and God. Jesus came to break that wall down. He is the way back to the Father, the truth about who God really is, and the life God always wanted to give.

And this promise did not end with the disciples. Jesus said the Helper, the Holy Spirit, would come and live inside everyone who loves him. That is still true today. God is not far away in a distant house. Through Jesus, he comes close.

For You

When you feel scared, maybe at night, maybe before something hard, you can remember Jesus' words. "Don't let your heart be troubled." Not because nothing bad ever happens, but because Jesus is preparing a place for you and he keeps his promises.

You can also ask him things, just like the disciples did. Ask him for help, ask him for peace, even ask him hard questions like Thomas and Philip did. He is not annoyed by your questions.

Praying Together
