Luke 4

The Explanation

Jesus walked into the desert. No food, no house, just sand and sun and wind. He was there forty days, and the Holy Spirit was with him. At the end he was very hungry, so hungry his stomach must have hurt.

That is when the devil came. He is God's enemy, and he wanted to trick Jesus into doing wrong. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "turn this stone into bread." Jesus could have done it. But he said, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God." He would rather trust God than fill his own stomach.

The devil did not give up. He took Jesus up high and showed him every kingdom in the world, shining like treasure. "Bow down to me," he said, "and it will all be yours." Jesus answered, "You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve him only." Then the devil took him to the very top of the temple. "Jump," he said. "Doesn't the Bible say angels will catch you?" Jesus said no. "You shall not tempt the Lord your God." Three times the devil tried. Three times Jesus said no. Then the devil left, but only for a while.

Jesus went to Nazareth, his hometown, and stood up in the synagogue to read. He opened the scroll and read words about himself: healing the brokenhearted, freeing prisoners, giving sight to blind eyes. "Today," he said, "this is happening, right here, in front of you." At first the people were amazed. Then they got angry and tried to throw him off a cliff. But Jesus walked right through the crowd, safe.

Later, in Capernaum, a man screamed in the synagogue. A demon was inside him. "Have you come to destroy us?" it shouted. "I know who you are, the Holy One of God!" Jesus said, "Be silent, and come out of him." And it did, without hurting the man at all. Everyone was amazed. Jesus healed Simon's mother-in-law from a fever too, just by standing over her and telling it to leave. All evening, sick people came, and Jesus healed every single one.

What Does This Mean?

Jesus was tempted, really tempted, just like you and me. But he did not give in, not once. He used God's own words like a shield. That is powerful. It also means Jesus has real authority, over hunger, over evil spirits, over sickness. When Jesus speaks, things obey him.

The Common Thread

Long ago, God promised to send someone who would set people free and heal what is broken. In the synagogue, Jesus said that promise was happening right there, through him. Every temptation he refused, every sick person he healed, was Jesus keeping God's promise, one step at a time.

For You

When you are tempted to lie, or grab something that is not yours, or be mean to your little brother, you can do what Jesus did. Say no, and remember something true God has said. You do not have to fight temptation alone. And when you are scared or sick, you can ask Jesus for help, just like the people in Capernaum did. He still listens.

Praying Together

Dear Jesus, thank you that you said no to the devil, even when it was hard. Help me say no to wrong things too. Thank you that you can heal and help anyone who comes to you. I come to you now. Amen.
