Mark 3

The Explanation

Jesus walked into the synagogue, and there was a man with a hand that had shriveled up. It could not move, could not hold anything, could not work.

Some men were watching Jesus. Not because they cared about the man's hand. They wanted to catch Jesus doing something wrong. It was the Sabbath, the resting day, and they thought healing counted as work.

Jesus said to the man, "Stand up." Then he turned to the watching men and asked, "Is it right to do good on the Sabbath, or to do harm? To save a life, or to kill?" Nobody answered. The room went silent.

Jesus looked around at them. He was angry, and he was sad, because their hearts were hard like stone. Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." The man did, and it was healed, strong as the other one.

Instead of celebrating, the Pharisees walked out and started plotting with Herod's men. They wanted to destroy Jesus.

Crowds kept coming anyway, from every direction, because they heard what he had done. So many pushed close to touch him that he had a boat ready to escape the crush. Even the evil spirits inside people would fall down and shout, "You are the Son of God!" Jesus told them firmly to be quiet.

Then Jesus went up a mountain and picked twelve men to be his closest friends. Simon, who he named Peter. James and John, called the Sons of Thunder. Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, another James, Thaddaeus, Simon, and Judas Iscariot, who would later betray him.

Jesus went home, but the crowd came again, so many that there was no room even to eat. His own family heard people saying he had lost his mind, and they came to get him. Meanwhile, teachers from Jerusalem said something worse: that Jesus cast out demons because he himself belonged to the devil.

Jesus answered with a picture. "Can Satan fight against Satan? If a kingdom fights itself, it falls apart. If a strong man's house is robbed, someone stronger had to tie him up first." He was saying: I am not working for the devil. I am defeating him.

Then his mother and brothers stood outside, calling for him. Jesus looked at the people sitting around him and said, "Whoever does the will of God is my brother, my sister, my mother."

What Does This Mean?

Jesus cared more about a hurting man than about a rule twisted the wrong way. The leaders loved their rules more than they loved people. That made Jesus genuinely angry, not just a little annoyed. His anger came from love, from grief that people could be so hard hearted.

Jesus was also being pushed from every side that day. Sick people wanted him. Evil spirits feared him. His own family doubted him. Religious leaders accused him. Yet nothing stopped him from doing good and speaking truth.

The Common Thread

Jesus is stronger than every sickness and every evil spirit, because he is God's own Son. The Pharisees could not see it, but the demons knew exactly who he was. Jesus came to tie up the strong man, the devil, and set people free. That is the whole story of the Bible: God fighting for his people, all the way to the cross.

For You

You cannot heal a withered hand. But you can still choose good over hardness. When someone at school is left out, you can be kind even if it costs you something, even if it is not the "convenient" moment. That is doing good like Jesus did.
