Mark 4

The Explanation

Jesus is standing by the lake. So many people come to listen that He steps into a boat and pushes off a little from the shore. The lake becomes His stage, the crowd on the beach His audience. And then He starts telling stories, but not just any stories. He tells parables: everyday scenes with a deeper meaning hidden inside.

The first parable is about a farmer sowing seed. Some seed falls on the path, where birds eat it. Some falls on rocky ground, sprouts quickly, but withers because it has no roots. Some falls among thorns that choke it. And some falls on good soil and gives a huge harvest, thirty, sixty, even a hundred times more.

Later, when Jesus is alone with His disciples, they ask what it means. He explains: the seed is God's word. The different soils are different kinds of people. Some hear it but forget it right away. Some are enthusiastic at first, but when things get hard, they quit. Some let worries and money crowd God out. And some really listen, and something grows in their lives.

Jesus tells two more small parables. A lamp is not put under a basket, but on a stand. God's truth is meant to be seen. Then He talks about a seed that grows secretly, day and night, while the farmer sleeps. He does not understand how, but it grows anyway. And He talks about a mustard seed, tiny as a grain of sand, that becomes a huge shrub where birds can nest.

At the end of the chapter something completely different happens. Jesus and His disciples cross the lake in the boat. A furious storm bursts out. Waves crash over the sides. The disciples are terrified, and Jesus is sleeping on a cushion in the back. They wake Him: "Teacher, don't you care that we are dying?" Jesus stands up, speaks to the wind and the sea, "Peace! Be still!" And it becomes completely quiet. Then He asks them, "Why are you so afraid? How is it that you have no faith?" And the disciples ask each other, in awe, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?"

What Does This Mean?

Mark 4 is about hearing and trusting. Jesus tells parables so people will think for themselves. He does not spoon-feed the answer. If you really want to know, you have to keep listening.

The parable of the sower is honest. Not everyone who hears about God will keep believing. That sounds harsh, but Jesus is not saying it to scare anyone. He is saying: watch what kind of soil you are. You can do something about that.

And then that storm. The same Jesus who tells stories about growing seeds turns out to be someone the wind obeys. The disciples had already seen a lot, but this scared them more than the storm itself. Who is this man?

The Common Thread

The whole Bible is like that seed that God sows. God speaks, and where His word takes root, something grows that no one can stop. God's kingdom often starts small, hidden, like a mustard seed. You barely notice it. But it becomes big.

And Jesus in that boat, sleeping while the storm rages, then commanding the sea with a word, that is a hint of who He really is. In the Old Testament, only God controls the sea. Mark wants you to slowly figure out: this is not just a teacher. This is God, come close.

For You

You hear about God at church, at home, at school perhaps. The question is not whether you hear it, but what happens with it inside you. Do you forget it by Monday? Do you get excited but drop it when a friend laughs at you? Or does something really grow?

And when your life feels like a storm, an argument, a fear, something at home, remember that Jesus is in the boat. He may seem asleep. But He is not powerless, and He is not far away.
