Matthew 17

Explanation and Bible story for elementary age (6-12)

Bible

The Explanation

Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. Just the four of them. Then something amazing happened. Jesus began to shine. His face lit up like the sun, and his clothes turned bright white, whiter than anything the disciples had ever seen. Suddenly two men stood there talking with him: Moses and Elijah, two heroes from long ago who had died many years before.

Peter did not know what to say, but he said something anyway. "Lord, it is good for us to be here. Let's build three tents!" While he was still talking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice spoke from the cloud. "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him."

The disciples fell to the ground. They were terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said, "and don't be afraid." When they looked up, Moses and Elijah were gone. Only Jesus stood there.

On the way down the mountain, Jesus told them to keep quiet about what they had seen, for now. Later they met a man whose son suffered terribly, falling into fire and water because of a demon inside him. The other disciples had tried to help but could not. Jesus healed the boy at once. When the disciples asked why they had failed, Jesus told them it was because their faith was too small. "If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, nothing will be impossible for you."

Jesus then told his friends something hard: he would be handed over, killed, and raised on the third day. The disciples were very sad to hear it. Later, in Capernaum, someone asked if Jesus paid the temple tax. Jesus told Peter to catch a fish, and inside its mouth was a coin, exactly enough to pay for both of them.

What Does This Mean?

For one moment, Peter, James, and John saw who Jesus really is. Not just a teacher walking dusty roads, but God's own Son, shining with glory. The voice from heaven left no doubt: listen to him. Would you have dared to speak, like Peter did, or would you have fallen to the ground too?

But Jesus did not leave them there, shaking with fear. He touched them and lifted them up. That is what he does with the boy who suffers, too. He does not just talk about the demon, he sends it away and heals the boy completely.

The Common Thread

Moses gave God's law. Elijah spoke God's words to the kings. Now both of them stand next to Jesus, showing that everything they pointed to is standing right there. Jesus is greater than both. He is the one the whole story of God has been leading to. And when he tells his friends he must die and rise again, he is showing them the real reason he came: not to build tents on a mountain, but to save people through the cross.

For You

You will not see Jesus shine like the sun today. But you can still listen to him, just like the voice said. That might mean praying when you are scared, like the disciples were. It might mean trusting God even when things feel too big for you, like a mountain that needs moving. Faith does not have to be huge. Even faith as small as a mustard seed is enough for Jesus to work with.

Talk About It

If you had been Peter, James, or John on that mountain, what do you think you would have felt?

Can you think of something that feels impossible to you, that you could pray about this week?

Praying Together

Dear Jesus, thank you that you are God's beloved Son. Thank you that you help people who cannot help themselves. Give us faith, even small faith, and help us to listen to you. Amen.
