Numbers 31
Explanation and Bible story for elementary age (7-12)
The Explanation
God spoke to Moses. He said the people of Midian had to be punished, because they had led Israel into sin against God, at a place called Peor. Moses sent twelve thousand men to war, one thousand from every tribe. Phinehas the priest went with them, carrying the trumpets. The army fought, and they won. They brought back sheep, cattle, donkeys, gold, and many captives.
But when Moses saw the officers coming home, he was angry. Not because they had lost, they had not lost a single man. He was angry because the women who had led Israel into sin were still alive. Moses gave hard orders, because this sin against God had brought a plague on his people before. Everyone who had touched the dead had to wash and wait outside the camp seven days, to become clean again. Everything taken from the enemy, gold, silver, cloth, wood, had to pass through fire or water, to be made clean too.
Then Moses counted everything. The plunder was split in two: half for the soldiers, half for the rest of Israel. A small part of each half was given to God, some to Eleazar the priest, some to the Levites who worked at the tabernacle. The officers even brought their own gold jewelry as a gift, so that Yahweh would forgive them, and Moses put it inside the Tent of Meeting, where God lived among his people.
What Does This Mean?
This is not an easy story. War is loud and frightening, and Moses' anger is hard to hear. But underneath it is a serious truth: what Israel did at Peor, turning from God, was not a small thing. It hurt the whole nation. God is patient, but he is not careless about sin. This chapter shows that following God sometimes means facing hard, uncomfortable things, and that holiness, being clean before God, mattered enormously to Israel. Nothing, not even captured gold, could just walk into the camp unchanged.
The Common Thread
Long before this chapter, Balaam had tried to curse Israel, but God turned his mouth to blessing instead. Later Balaam gave Israel bad advice anyway, and it caused real damage. Even here, God still keeps his promise to protect his people and bring them to the land he promised. Every offering, every act of purifying, points forward to something Israel could not yet fully do for themselves: becoming truly clean before God. Much later, Jesus would do this perfectly, not with fire and water on garments, but with his own life, to make people clean inside, forever.
For You
You will not fight wars like this. But you know what it feels like to be pulled toward something you know is wrong, like Israel was pulled toward Peor. This chapter dares you to ask: who are you listening to? Ask God today to help you listen only to him, even when someone else has bad advice. And when you have done wrong, you can bring it to God, just like Israel brought their gold. He is willing to make you clean.

Praying Together

What others discovered
They fought against Midian, as Yahweh commanded Moses; and they killed every male." The verse sits heavy, and it should. Don't rush past it. Go back six chapters: what began as a friendly invitation to a meal ended with twenty four thousand Israelite graves. Sin that seduces never introduces itself as an enemy. It comes smiling, offering food. What have you decided is harmless because it was kind to you?
