Zechariah 5
Explanation and Bible story for elementary age (7-12)
The Explanation
Zechariah is a prophet who lived a long time ago, when the people of Israel had come back from a faraway country. God gave him strange visions, like living dreams, to show him what was going on in the world and in God's heart. In chapter 5, Zechariah sees two of these visions, and both are unusual.
First he sees a flying scroll. A scroll is a long roll of paper with writing on it. But this one is huge, about ten meters long and five meters wide, and it flies through the air. An angel tells Zechariah that this scroll is a curse going out over the whole land. On one side is written that thieves will be punished. On the other side, that people who swear falsely by God's name will be punished too. The scroll goes into the houses of people who do these things and stays there until nothing is left. That sounds harsh, but it means: God sees what happens in secret, even inside your own house.
Then the angel shows Zechariah something else. A basket appears, the kind used to measure grain. The lid is made of lead, heavy and grey. When the lid is lifted, there is a woman sitting inside. The angel says: "This is Wickedness." He pushes her back into the basket and slams the lead lid shut. Then two women come flying, with wings like a stork, and they lift the basket up and carry it far away, to a country called Shinar (that is the region where Babylon used to be).
So God shows Zechariah two things: sin will be punished, and evil will be removed from His people. It is taken away and locked up somewhere else.
What Does This Mean?
For the people who had just come back from exile, this vision was actually good news, even though it sounds a bit scary. They had lived in a land where lying and stealing had been normal. God was saying: I want to make My people clean. I will not close My eyes to things that are wrong, but I also will not leave evil among you.
The flying scroll shows that God's Word is active. It does not just lie in a book somewhere. It goes out and touches real life, real houses, real people. The basket with the lid shows that God can pack up evil and carry it away. He is stronger than the wickedness that seems to be everywhere.
The Common Thread
Zechariah lived hundreds of years before Jesus, but he was already looking toward Him. In this vision God shows that sin has to be dealt with. It cannot simply stay. Later, Jesus came and took the curse of sin on Himself on the cross. What Zechariah saw in a picture, Jesus made real. He takes away what is wrong, not by locking it in a basket, but by carrying it Himself.
And the scroll that flies out? John, much later, also saw a scroll in a vision (in Revelation). God's Word keeps going out, all the way to us today.
For You
Maybe you sometimes wonder if God really sees the small things. That lie you told at school. The thing you took that was not yours. The vision says: yes, He sees. That is not to scare you, but because He takes you seriously. You matter enough for God to care about what you do.
But there is more. God does not only see wrong. He also takes it away when you bring it to Him. You do not have to carry it around like a heavy basket. You can hand it over to Jesus. That is what "forgiveness" means: He carries what you cannot carry.
And honesty matters. In a world where a lot of people lie and cheat a little, you can be someone who tells the truth. Not because you are better, but because you know a God who is truth.
Talk About It
Why do you think God shows Zechariah these things in pictures, instead of just telling him plainly?
Is there something in your life that feels like a heavy lid on a basket? Something you would rather not open? What could it mean to bring that to God?
Praying Together
Lord God, thank You that You see everything, also the things I hide. Thank You that Jesus carries away what is wrong in me. Help me to be honest, and to trust that You are stronger than any evil. Amen.

What others discovered
Wickedness is not just carried off, she is given a house. Sin always wants an address, a place prepared where it can settle and be served. God lifted it out of Judah, but it found a shrine in Shinar. Ask yourself honestly: what have you let move in? What have you furnished a room for, instead of letting it be carried away?
Then again I lifted up my eyes, and saw, and behold, a flying scroll." Zechariah looks up and sees God's written word airborne, hunting sin across the land. Notice, it flies. God's truth is not stuck on a shelf waiting for you to open it. It goes out, it finds, it lands. Where is it landing in your life today?
