Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
David had a big box. A special box. It was God's ark.
Men carried it into a tent. A tent just for God.
David gave fire-gifts to God. Then he gave gifts to everyone.
Bread for you. Meat for you. Sweet raisin cake for you.
Every single person got some. Even the children.
Then David said, sing! Sing loud for God!
Some men had harps. Some had cymbals, clash, clash, clash!
Some men had trumpets. Loud, shiny trumpets.
A man named Asaph led the singing. He sang first of all.
What Does This Mean?
Listen to what they sang.
"Thank Yahweh. Call his name. Tell everyone what he did."
"Sing to him. Sing praises. Tell his wonders."
They sang about God carrying his people. Long, long ago.
God kept them safe when they were small in number.
He told even kings, "Don't touch my people. Leave them alone."
God watched over them, like a shepherd watches his sheep.
That made everyone want to sing. Loud and happy.
The Common Thread
God made a promise. A very old promise.
He promised Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob too.
"I will give you a land," God said. "It is yours."
God keeps his promises. Forever and ever.
Long after this day, God sent someone else. He sent Jesus.
Jesus is God's biggest promise kept. The best gift of all.
That is why we still sing today. Just like Asaph did.
For You
The people sang, "Let the trees clap their branches!"
"Let the sea shout, whoosh, whoosh!"
Everything can be happy for God. Even the trees. Even you.
You can sing too. In the car. In your bed.
You can clap your hands, like cymbals, clash, clash.
You can say thank you to God, just like they did.
At the end, everyone went home. David went home too.
He blessed his family. He kissed them, maybe. He was glad.
You can bless your family too. Just by loving them.

Dear God,
Thank you for bread. Thank you for songs.
Thank you that you never forget your promises.
Help me sing loud for you, like Asaph did.

What others discovered
Obed-Edom once kept the ark in his own house for three months, and God blessed him there. Now he stands at the door with sixty-eight of his relatives, "to be doorkeepers." He does not get a throne. He gets a threshold. And he brings his whole family with him. What blessing has come into your house that others should share?
The ark had finally come home, and David hands the singers a command with two directions: "Sing to him. Sing praises to him. Tell of all his marvelous works." Two of those lines go up, one goes sideways. Praise was never meant to stay between you and God alone.
So who has heard your list lately? Not the famous rescues, the small ones. The bill that got covered. The night you didn't drown. Tell someone.
