1 Chronicles 22

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

King David sat still. He looked at a big, empty hill. Once, God had spoken there.

David had a dream in his heart. A house for God. A big, beautiful house.

Stones. So many stones. David called men to cut them, tap, tap, tap.

Iron for nails. Bronze, shiny and heavy. Cedar trees, tall and sweet-smelling.

David gathered it all. Piles and piles, so much you could not count it.

But David was old now. His hands were tired.

So he called his son. His name was Solomon.

David looked at him and said something important.

What Does This Mean?

David said, "I wanted to build God's house myself."

"But God said no, David. Your hands have fought too many wars."

"You will get a son. A son of peace. His name will be Solomon."

"He will build my house. I will be his Father."

Solomon listened. Quiet. Big eyes. This was his job now.

David was not sad. He was glad. He said, "Now, my son, may Yahweh be with you."

"Be strong. Be brave. Don't be afraid. Don't be scared, not even a little."

The Common Thread

David could not build the house. But God already knew who could.

A son. Born after David. A son who brings peace.

Peace, that is a good word. No more fighting. Quiet, everywhere.

Later, much later, another Son would come. He also brings peace.

He also builds something. Not with stones, but with people who love God.

God always keeps His promise. He knew it long before it happened.

For You

Sometimes you cannot do something yet. You are still small.

That's all right. David gave everything he had to Solomon.

Wood, stones, iron, all of it. And also good words: be strong, don't be afraid.

You too may receive that. You are also allowed to be brave.

God is with you, just like He was with Solomon.

Talk About It

Have you ever helped with something for someone else, even a little? What do you do when you're a little scared?

Praying Together

Dear God, Thank You for always keeping Your promises. Make me brave, like You made Solomon brave. Thank You that You are always with me. Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 8

God told David, "You shall not build a house to my name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight." Then David spent his last years gathering stone, iron, and gold for a temple he would never see finished. He kept working on a dream that belonged to someone else. Could you do that? Not every no from God is a door closing. Sometimes it is an invitation to build for the ones coming after you.

Insight Editorial on verse 10

David spent his final years stockpiling stone, iron and cedar for a house he would never walk into. Not his project, his son's. And notice what God promised Solomon before any brick was laid: "he shall be my son, and I will be his father." Belonging first, building second. What are you preparing that someone else will finish?
