1 Chronicles 5
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
Long, long ago there lived men who were very strong. They were called the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and half of the family of Manasseh. Big names, right? They belonged to God's people.
These men had a lot of animals. So many! Sheep, and camels, and donkeys. They lived in a big land with lots of grass. The animals could eat and eat. The sun was warm. The grass was green.
But one day something happened. Other men came. They wanted to fight. They had swords and bows. It was scary.
The men of Reuben looked around. What must we do? They were with many, but the other men were with many too. Then they did something important. They folded their hands. They cried out to God. "God, please help us! We cannot do it alone!"
And God heard them. God always hears. He helped them in the fight. The strong men won. They came home with the sheep and the camels and the donkeys. Everyone was safe.
What Does This Mean?
The men were strong. They had swords. They had bows. But do you know what helped the most? That they called to God. God listens when His children call. Even in the middle of a scary fight.
But sadly, later something sad happened. The men forgot God. They said, "We don't need God anymore." They bowed down to other things. Little statues. Not to the real God.
And then they no longer had help. A mean king came and took them far, far away from home. That is very sad.
The Common Thread
God wants us to call on Him. Always. When we are happy, and when we are scared. Later, much later, Jesus came. Jesus said, "Come to Me. I will help you."
Jesus never forgets us. And He wants us never to forget Him. He holds our hand. He listens when we whisper. He listens when we shout. He always listens.
For You
Are you sometimes a little scared? Maybe of the dark. Maybe of a big dog. Maybe when Mommy is away for a little while.
Then you can do what those strong men did. You can call to God. You do not have to shout hard. God has very good ears. You can just whisper: "God, help me." And God hears you. Really. Every time.
And you know what else? Do not forget God when you are happy. When you play. When the sun shines. Then you can say thank you. God likes that.
Talk About It
When are you sometimes a little scared? What can you say to God then?
What is the most beautiful thing God made? Shall we say thank you for it together?
Praying Together
Dear God,
Thank You that You listen. Always. Even when I whisper. When I am scared, please help me. When I am happy, thank You. I want to remember You every day.
Amen.

Mighty men of valor, famous men, heads of their fathers' houses." Then the very next line: "They trespassed against the God of their fathers." Their names outlived their faithfulness. Strength and reputation held nothing in place. What are you trusting to keep you steady, your standing or your God?
The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, and Pallu, Carmi, and Hezron."
Reuben was the firstborn, and yet his name mostly appears in lists like this, quiet, uncelebrated. The birthright passed to Joseph because Reuben stumbled badly (verse 1). Still, God did not erase him. His sons are named, remembered, counted.
You may feel your story has been marked by failure, that the blessing slipped through your fingers. But notice: God still writes your name. He does not forget the ones who fell.
They made war with the Hagrites, with Jetur, and Naphish, and Nodab."
Notice they went to war, but the next verse tells us they won because "they cried to God in the battle." Strong warriors, skilled fighters, and still they knew the sword alone wouldn't save them. What battle are you facing today without stopping to cry out?
