1 John 2

The Explanation
Listen. There was a man. His name was John. John was very old. He had known Jesus for a long, long time. And now John was writing a letter. A letter to people who loved Jesus. To big people and to little children too.
John wrote: "Little children, listen well." He wanted to say something important.
John wrote: "God is light." Light, like the sun. Light, like a lamp in the dark. With God there is no dark corner. Everything is bright.
What Does This Mean?
John said: do you love Jesus? Then you do what Jesus says. And Jesus says: love each other.
Think of two children. One child is happy. The other child is sad. If you love, then you go to the sad child. You sit next to him. Maybe you give him your cookie. That is love.
But sometimes, said John, children push each other. Or they shout mean words. Then it is dark inside. Not light. John wrote: stay in the light. Stay close to Jesus.
The Common Thread
John also wrote something wonderful. Something to remember. He wrote: "Little children, your sins are forgiven."
Do you know what sins are? All the naughty things. The times you hit. The times you did not listen. The times you were angry.
Jesus takes all those things away. Really. Gone. Because Jesus loves you very much. He died on the cross and rose again. And now He says: come, little child. I forgive you. Start again.
That is the good news John told. Then and now. To big people and to you.
For You
John said one more thing. He said: the world is full of shiny things. Beautiful things. Things you want to have. A new toy. A big candy. More, more, more.
But those things go away one day. They break. They get lost. They finish.
God stays forever. Jesus stays forever. And you, if you belong to Jesus, you stay with Him forever too.
So John says, very softly: little child, stay with Jesus. He is the best. He is light. He is love. He never lets you go.
Can you feel it? Jesus is holding you. Like a shepherd holds a little lamb. Warm and safe.
You do not have to be afraid of the dark. Because Jesus is light. And He shines inside your heart. Even when you are sleeping. Even when Mommy or Daddy is not near. Jesus stays.
That is what John wrote in his letter. A long time ago. But it is still true. Today. For you.

John writes a whole letter to teach, then says "you don't need for anyone to teach you." Not a contradiction. He means the smooth new voices claiming you're missing some secret. The Spirit already showed you who Jesus is. That quiet unease when a teaching sounds off, listen to it. Then stay where you are.
He who says he remains in him ought himself also to walk just like he walked." Not fly like he flew. Walk. Ordinary steps, one after another, the way Jesus stopped for the blind man, ate with the wrong people, knelt with a towel. Where you are going today, someone will need that kind of walking. Will they get it from you?
I have not written to you because you don't know the truth, but because you know it." John isn't filling a hole in your head. He's stirring something already alive in you. Sometimes what you need isn't new information, it's someone saying: you already know this, now stand on it. What truth have you been waiting to feel certain about, when God has already given it to you?
These things I have written to you concerning those who would lead you astray." John doesn't say who they are. He says what they do. Some voices don't attack your faith, they just slowly move you off center. Notice what happens to your love for Jesus after you listen. Does it warm, or cool? That tells you more than the argument does.
