1 Kings 4

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

Long, long ago there was a king. His name was Solomon. Solomon was a very special king. God had made him wise. That means: Solomon knew a lot. He knew what was good and what was not good.

Solomon lived in a big palace. He had helpers. Lots of helpers! One helper wrote everything down. Another helper cooked food. Someone else took care of the horses. And someone else led the soldiers. Everyone had his own job.

Solomon was king of a big country. Everywhere people lived. In the north and in the south. In the east and in the west. And they were all safe. Nobody was scared. They lived under palm trees. They ate their own bread. They drank from their own well. It was peaceful. So peaceful.

Every day, food came to the palace. A lot of food! Bread, and meat, and flour. Enough for everybody. There was plenty. No one was hungry.

And Solomon knew so much! He knew about trees, the tall ones and the little ones. He knew about animals, big animals and tiny bugs. He knew about birds and fish. God had put all that in his head. From everywhere, people came to listen to Solomon. They came from far away. And they thought: what a wise king!

What Does This Mean?

God was good to Solomon. God gave him wisdom. God gave him peace. God gave him food. Everything Solomon had, came from God.

The Common Thread

Solomon was a good king. But do you know Who is an even better King? Jesus! Jesus is King forever. With Jesus you are safe. With Jesus there is always enough. Solomon points a little finger to Jesus. Look, this is what a good King is like. But Jesus is even greater.

For You

Do you know what is so wonderful? God still gives today. God gives you bread. God gives you a bed. God gives you a mommy and a daddy or someone who takes care of you. God gives you sunshine on your face. God gives you sleep at night.

Sometimes we forget. We just eat our sandwich. We just crawl into bed. But everything comes from God. Every day.

You can say thank you. Just short. "Thank You, God, for my sandwich." "Thank You, God, for my bed." God hears it. He really does.

Talk About It

What did God give you today? Can you name something?

Solomon was wise because God gave it to him. Who do you want to ask for help when you don't know something?

Praying Together

Dear God,

Thank You for the food. Thank You for my bed. Thank You for the people around me. You are good. You are a great King. Thank You for Jesus.

Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 17

Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah, in Issachar." That is the whole verse. One name, one district, one month a year of feeding the king's table. No miracle, no speech, no fame. Just a man who did his part when his turn came around. God kept the name. Your quiet month of faithfulness is not lost on him either.

Insight Editorial on verse 7

Twelve officers, each responsible for one month of provision for the king's household. Notice the rhythm: no one carried the whole weight alone. Solomon's kingdom ran on shared burden, ordered rest, trusted delegation.

What are you trying to carry twelve months a year? Even a king needed others. You are not the exception.
