1 Kings 9

The Explanation
Solomon built a house. Not just any house.
A house for God.
It was big. It was beautiful. Gold inside, wood that smelled sweet.
When it was finished, something wonderful happened. God came to Solomon. At night. Softly, like a whisper in the dark.
"I heard you," God said. "I hear your prayers."
Solomon listened. His heart was beating fast.
"This house is holy now," God said. "I will stay here. My eyes will watch it. Always."
What Does This Mean?
Then God said something important.
"Solomon, will you walk with me? Like your father David did?"
Solomon nodded, in his heart.
"If you do," God said, "your family will always be king. Always."
But God kept talking. His voice grew a little sad.
"But if you turn away from me, and worship other gods, then it will go wrong. The house will not stay standing. People will pass by and be shocked. They will ask, why did this happen? And the answer will be: because they left God."
Solomon was quiet. That was a big promise. And a big warning.
The Common Thread
Solomon built a house of stone. A place for God to live.
But God wanted something more, later, much later. Not a house of stone.
He wanted to come and live close to people, himself.
That happened with Jesus. Jesus is like a house too. God lived in him.
God always wants to be near. In the temple. In Jesus. Even now.
For You
The story goes on. Solomon built cities. Ships sailed far away, to a place called Ophir, and brought back gold.
Three times each year, Solomon brought gifts to God on the altar. He said thank you. He gave the best things he had.
You can do that too. Not gold. Not ships.
But you can say thank you to God. With your own small voice. In your own little room.
God still listens. Just like he listened to Solomon, in the night.
