1 Samuel 16

The Explanation
Samuel was sad. Very sad. The king of the land was not a good king anymore. Then God spoke. "Samuel, do not be sad. Go on a journey. Go to Bethlehem. There lives a man called Jesse. One of his sons will be the new king."
Samuel took a little jug of oil. Special oil. And off he went.
In Bethlehem, Jesse came out. And his sons came too. Big sons. Strong sons.
The first son walked past. He was tall. He was strong. Samuel thought, "Oh! This must be the new king!"
But God said, "No, Samuel. Not this one. People look at the outside. But I look inside. I look at the heart."
The next son walked past. God said, "No, not him either." And the next. "No." And the next. "No." Seven sons walked past. Seven times God said no.
Samuel looked at Jesse. "Are these all your boys?"
Jesse said, "There is one more. The littlest one. He is out with the sheep."
Samuel said, "Go and get him!"
And there he came. A boy with red cheeks and bright eyes. His name was David. And God said, "Yes! This is the one. This is my king."
Samuel poured the oil on David's head. Slowly it dripped down. And God's Spirit came on David. From that moment on, God was with him. Always.
What Does This Mean?
God did not choose the biggest brother. Not the strongest. Not the oldest. God chose the smallest one. The boy from the field. The boy with the sheep.
People look at the outside. But God looks at your heart. God sees who you really are.
The Common Thread
David became a special king. He took care of his people, the way he took care of his sheep. Long, long after David, another King came. Jesus. Jesus was also born in Bethlehem, just like David. And Jesus is the very best King. He takes care of us. He loves us so much.
For You
God sees you. Yes, you! Not just your clothes or your hair. Not how big or how small you are. God looks inside. God sees your heart.
Maybe sometimes you feel little. Or forgotten. Like David out in the field with the sheep. But God does not forget you. God knows exactly where you are. And He loves you very much.
You do not have to be the biggest or the strongest. God can use you. Just the way you are.
