2 Samuel 23
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
Listen. There was once a king. His name was David. He was old now. His hair was grey. His hands were tired.
David had many, many years of life behind him. He had watched sheep as a boy. He had fought a giant. He had sung songs to God. He had been king for a long, long time.
Now David sat still. And he thought about God. He thought so much, that a song came out. A very last song.
David sang softly. "God spoke to me. God's words are in my mouth. God is like the morning sun. God shines. God is like rain on green grass."
Do you see it? The sun in the morning, warm on your face. The rain that makes the grass wet and shiny. That is what God is like, David sang.
Then David thought about his strong men. He had many strong friends. Soldiers. Big men, with big swords.
There were three of them who were extra brave. One of them was thirsty. David said, "Oh, I wish I had water from the well at home." That well was far away. And bad men stood in the way.
But those three brave friends went anyway. They walked past the bad men. They got the water. They brought it to David.
David held the cup. But he did not drink. He poured the water out on the ground. For God. Because that water was too special. His friends had risked their lives for it.
What Does This Mean?
David knew: God had been with him his whole life. When he watched sheep. When he was little. When he was big. When he was king. When he was old.
God had spoken to David. And David listened.
The Common Thread
David sang about a king who shines like the sun. But David himself was almost gone.
Later came another King. A King who really shines. His name is Jesus. Jesus is like the sun in the morning. Jesus is like rain on the grass. Jesus makes everything alive again.
David could not know everything yet. But he sang about it. And it came true, with Jesus.
For You
You are still small. But God speaks to you too. In the Bible. In songs. When father or mother tells about Him.
Do you want to listen, like David? Even when you are little? Even when you are big? Your whole life long?
And do you know what is nice? God is with you now. In the sun on your cheeks. In the rain on the window. God is close by.
Talk About It
Where do you see something today that makes you think of God? The sun? The rain? A flower?
David had three brave friends. Who is your friend? And who is Jesus' friend?
Praying Together
Dear God. Thank You for David. Thank You for his song. You are like the sun. You are like the rain. Please talk to me too. I want to listen. Amen.
