Daniel 2
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
Long ago there was a king. His name was Nebuchadnezzar. He was a very big king, in a very big palace.
One night the king slept in his bed. And he had a dream. A strange dream. When he woke up, his heart was beating fast. He thought: what did I dream? I do not remember!
The king was cross. He called all his wise men. "Tell me my dream!" he shouted. "And tell me what it means!"
The wise men were scared. "But king, we do not know your dream! Nobody can do that."
The king got very angry. Very, very angry.
What Does This Mean?
In the same city lived a boy. Well, a young man. His name was Daniel. Daniel loved God. He talked with God every day.
Daniel heard about the king. And Daniel went to his friends. "Come," he said. "Let us pray. God knows everything. God can help us."
So they prayed. Together. Quietly.
And that night, God did something wonderful. God showed Daniel the dream. The whole dream. In pictures, while Daniel slept.
Daniel woke up. He was so happy! He said, "Thank You, God. Thank You, thank You. You are so wise. You know everything."
The Common Thread
The next day Daniel went to the king. He was not scared anymore. Because God was with him.
"King," said Daniel, "no wise man can tell you your dream. But there is a God in heaven. He knows everything. And He told me."
Then Daniel told the whole dream. About a big, big statue. With a head of gold. And feet of clay. And a stone came rolling. The stone hit the statue. And the stone became a huge mountain. So big it filled the whole world.
"King," said Daniel, "that stone is God's Kingdom. It will never, never go away."
The king listened. His mouth fell open. "Your God is the greatest God," he said. And he bowed down.
That stone, that big mountain, that is Jesus. Jesus is the King who stays forever.
For You
Daniel had a big problem. Way too big.
Do you know what he did? He prayed. He asked God for help.
And God helped him.
You may do that too. When you are scared. When something is hard. When you do not know what to do.
Just say, "God, please help me." God hears you. Always. Even when you whisper very softly.
God is not far away. God is close. Like a good Father.

Notice who Nebuchadnezzar summons when sleep leaves him troubled: "the magicians, and the enchanters, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans." The most powerful king on earth, and his first instinct is to reach for the spiritual experts money can buy.
When something shakes you at 3 a.m., where does your hand reach first? The king surrounded himself with wisdom, yet none of it could touch what God alone had spoken into his dreams.
