Genesis 39

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-5)

Bible

The Explanation

Joseph was far from home. Far, far away.

Some bad men had sold him. Now he was in Egypt.

A man named Potiphar bought Joseph. Potiphar had a big house.

But Joseph was not alone. God was with Joseph.

God was with him every day. In the house, in the field, everywhere.

Potiphar saw it. He saw that Joseph did everything well.

So Potiphar smiled at Joseph. He gave him the whole house to take care of.

Joseph was strong and had a kind face.

What Does This Mean?

But then something hard happened.

Potiphar's wife looked at Joseph. She wanted him to do a bad thing.

Joseph said, "No." He said it clearly.

"I will not do this," said Joseph. "It would be wicked. It would be a sin against God."

Day after day, she asked. Day after day, Joseph said no.

One day she grabbed his coat. Joseph ran. He ran right outside, without his coat.

Then she told a lie. A big, ugly lie about Joseph.

Potiphar heard the lie. He was very angry.

He took Joseph and put him in prison. Behind thick walls, behind a locked door.

That was not fair. Joseph did nothing wrong.

The Common Thread

But listen. Even in the dark prison, God did not leave.

"Yahweh was with Joseph," the Bible says. Still with him. Even there.

God made the prison keeper kind to Joseph. God made everything Joseph did go well, even in that dark place.

Later, much later, Jesus was also treated unfairly. People said lies about Him too.

But God was with Jesus, all the way to the end.

God stays close to people who are treated unfairly. He never walks away.

For You

Sometimes someone tells a lie about you. Sometimes something happens that is not fair.

You feel sad. Maybe you want to cry.

Joseph felt that too. But God stayed with Joseph, even in prison.

God stays with you too. In your room, at school, in the dark, everywhere.

You can hold onto that, like holding a warm hand.

Talk About It

Can you think of a time something felt unfair to you? What did you do?

What do you think it means that God was "with" Joseph, even in prison?

Praying Together

Dear God, Thank You that You are always near. Even when things are hard. Even in the dark. Stay close to me too. Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 21

Joseph is innocent, and still the prison door shuts. Yet read what follows: "But Yahweh was with Joseph, and showed kindness to him." God did not spare him the cell; He went into it with him. Sometimes the kindness you're waiting for doesn't come as rescue. It comes as company, right where you are.
