Genesis 42
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
Far away, there was no bread. No bread for cakes. No bread at all.
Jacob's sons had big hungry tummies. So they went to Egypt. Egypt had grain.
Ten brothers walked, and walked, and walked. They bowed down low. Down to the ground.
Before them stood a big man. He was the boss of all the grain. But the brothers did not know him.
It was Joseph! Their own brother Joseph. The one they had lost, long ago.
Joseph knew them right away. But he did not say who he was. Not yet.
He talked rough. "Where do you come from?" he asked. The brothers were scared.
What Does This Mean?
Joseph put one brother, Simeon, in a little room. He said, "Bring your youngest brother here."
The brothers talked to each other. They remembered something sad. Long ago, they were mean to Joseph. Very mean.
"We are guilty," they whispered. They felt sorry in their hearts.
Joseph heard every word. And Joseph turned away, and he cried. He cried quiet tears.
Then he wiped his face. He gave them grain, so much grain, for their donkeys to carry home.
The Common Thread
Joseph could have been angry forever. He had every reason to be.
But look, he cried instead of shouting. His heart was still soft, even after everything.
God was watching over this whole family. Even when they did not see Him. Even when everything felt scary and mixed up.
One day, God would send Someone else. Someone named Jesus. Jesus also had brothers who did not treat Him well. But Jesus loved them anyway, all the way to the end.
For You
Have you ever done something you felt sorry about? The brothers felt sorry too.
You can tell God. "I am sorry," you can whisper. He hears you, just like He heard the brothers.
And when someone says sorry to you, you can be soft, like Joseph. Not hard. Not mean back.
Talk About It
Why do you think Joseph cried when he turned away?
What do you say when you feel sorry for something you did?
Praying Together
Dear God, thank You for watching over this family. Thank You that You watch over me too. When I do something wrong, help me say sorry. Help me have a soft heart, like Joseph. Amen.

What others discovered
They come home with full sacks and one brother missing. Years before, they had sold Joseph and then sat down to eat bread beside the pit. Now the price of grain is a brother left behind: "Leave one of your brothers with me." God has a way of walking us back to the choice we thought was buried. What will you do this time?
Twenty years of silence, and then it all comes out. Reuben says, "Didn't I tell you, saying, 'Don't sin against the child,' and you wouldn't listen?" He was right. He objected. And Joseph still went into the pit. Being the one who spoke up is not the same as being the one who stopped it. Where have you said the right thing, then let it happen anyway?
Joseph says to his brothers, "It is like I told you, saying, 'You are spies!'" They stand before him, guilty of a different crime entirely, unaware they are speaking to the brother they sold. Notice how sin has a way of catching up with us in disguise. What we buried in the past often meets us again, not to destroy us, but to bring us to honesty. God was already writing grace into their reckoning.
All these things are against me." Jacob says this at the very moment God is working everything for him. Joseph is alive, ruling Egypt. Simeon will be released. Benjamin will be safe. Famine will end at Pharaoh's table.
How often do you read your life the way Jacob did? What if the thing you're grieving is the beginning of your rescue?
