Genesis 44

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

The brothers had food again. Big bags full of grain. They said goodbye and walked away. Donkeys clip clopping on the road.

But Joseph had a secret plan. He told his helper, "Put my silver cup in the youngest one's bag." That was Benjamin. Little Benjamin, who did not know a thing.

The brothers were not far away yet. Then the helper came running. Fast, fast behind them. "Stop!" he said. "Someone stole a cup!"

The brothers were surprised. "Not us!" they said. "Look in our bags if you want!"

So they opened all the bags. One by one. The oldest brother first. Then the next. Then the next. And there, in Benjamin's bag, something shiny. The silver cup.

Oh no.

What Does This Mean?

The brothers were so scared. They tore their clothes, that is how sad and afraid they were. They walked back to the city. Slowly. Heads down.

They came to Joseph's house. They fell down on the ground in front of him. Judah stepped forward. He said, "We will all be your slaves."

But Joseph said, "No. Only the one with the cup stays. The rest of you may go home."

Go home, without Benjamin? Judah could not let that happen.

The Common Thread

Judah began to talk. He told about their father far away. An old man, who loved Benjamin so much. "If the boy does not come home," Judah said, "our father will die of sadness."

Then Judah said something big. "Please, let me stay instead of the boy. Let Benjamin go home. Let me be the slave."

Judah wanted to take the punishment. So someone else could go free.

Long after this, Someone else did that too. Jesus took the hard thing, so we could go free. Just like Judah stood in Benjamin's place.

For You

Have you ever wanted to help someone, even if it was hard for you? Judah loved his brother so much. He was willing to give up his own freedom.

That is big love. The same big love Jesus has for you.

Talk About It

Why did Judah want to stay instead of Benjamin?

Can you think of someone who helped you, even when it was hard for them?

Praying Together

Dear God, Thank You for people who love us so much. Thank You for Jesus, who helps us. Thank You that You always see us. Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 8

They say it with such confidence: "How then should we steal silver or gold out of your lord's house?" These are the same men who once took silver for a brother. They don't know Joseph is listening to every word. Grace had been quietly working on them for years. Sometimes the proof that God has changed you is a sentence you could not have said before.
