Hebrews 11

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

Come, sit close. I will tell you a story about people who trusted God. Long, long ago.

There was a man. His name was Noah. God said to Noah, "It is going to rain. Build a big boat." Noah could not see any rain. Not one drop. The sky was blue. But Noah trusted God. So he built the boat. Bang, bang, bang went his hammer. And then it rained. And it rained. And it rained some more.

There was another man. His name was Abraham. God said, "Abraham, go." "Where to?" asked Abraham. God said, "I will show you." Abraham did not know the way. But he went. He trusted God.

Abraham had a wife. Her name was Sarah. Sarah was old. Very old. She had white hair and wrinkly hands. Sarah wanted a baby so much. But she had no baby. God said, "Sarah, you will get a little boy." Sarah trusted God. And yes! A tiny baby came. She held him close.

Then there was a little baby named Moses. A bad king wanted to hurt him. But Moses' mommy and daddy hid him. Three whole months. They trusted God. God kept little Moses safe.

What Does This Mean?

All these people did something very special. They trusted God, even when they could not see Him. Even when it was hard.

That is called faith. Faith means: I believe God. I hold His hand, even in the dark.

The Common Thread

God made the whole big world. The sun, the moon, the trees, and you. He spoke, and everything came.

And God always keeps His promises. Always. He said, "I will send Someone to help you." And He did it. He sent Jesus. Jesus loves you very much.

Noah, Abraham, Sarah, and Moses all waited for Jesus. They did not see Him yet. But they knew: God is good. God will do it.

For You

You cannot see God with your eyes. But He is here. Right now. Close to you.

When you are scared in the dark, God is there. When you are happy and laughing, God is there. When mommy or daddy tucks you in, God is there.

You can trust Him. Just like Noah. Just like Abraham. Just like Sarah. Just like Moses.

Do you know what? God sees you. And God loves you. Very, very much.

Talk About It

Noah could not see the rain yet, but he trusted God. What is something you cannot see, but you know it is there?

God was with Abraham on the long road. Who is with you when you are scared?

Praying Together

Dear God,

Thank You that You are here. Even though I cannot see You. I want to trust You. Just like Noah. Just like Abraham. Please hold my hand.

Amen.

What others discovered

Insight Editorial on verse 16

Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God." Think about who He is saying that over: tent dwellers with no address, people who died without receiving what was promised. Their whole resume was longing. And God lets His name be tied to theirs forever. The ache you carry for home is not weakness. He has already built the city.

Insight Editorial on verse 36

Others were tried by mocking and scourging, yes, moreover by bonds and imprisonment." Notice what comes first on that list. Not the whip, not the chains. Mocking. God does not treat the laughter you endure as a small thing; He records it right beside prison walls. These had the same faith as the ones who shut the mouths of lions, only a different ending. Could you be one of the "others"?
