Hebrews 2
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
Listen carefully. I am going to tell you about someone very special. His name is Jesus.
A long time ago, God said many beautiful things. He whispered to His people. He spoke through angels. And then, one day, God did something even more wonderful. He sent His own Son. That Son is Jesus.
Jesus came down from heaven. Down, down, down. All the way to the earth. He became a little baby, just like you were once. He got hungry. He got tired. He got a boo-boo when He bumped Himself. Jesus knew what it was like to be a person. Just like us.
What Does This Mean?
Why did Jesus come down? Because He loves people so much. He loves you. And He loves me.
People sometimes do things that are wrong. And people are sometimes scared. Very scared. Scared of the dark. Scared of being alone. Scared when Mommy is not there.
Jesus came to help. He came to say, "Do not be afraid. I am here."
The Common Thread
But then something sad happened. Jesus died on a cross. His friends cried. It was dark that day. Very dark.
And yet. Listen well. Jesus was stronger than dying. Three days later, He was alive again! Alive! God gave Him a beautiful crown. A crown of gold and light. Jesus is King now. King of everything.
There is someone bad. His name is the devil. He wanted to make people scared forever. But Jesus said, "No. Not anymore." Jesus took away the fear. He took away the badness. He is stronger. Much, much stronger.
For You
Do you know what Jesus says about you? He calls you His little brother. Or His little sister. Really! Jesus is not ashamed of you. He is happy with you.
And when you are scared, you can whisper His name. Just softly. "Jesus." He hears you. He was scared once too, when He was on the earth. So He understands. He knows exactly how it feels.
When you go to sleep tonight, and it is dark, remember: Jesus is close by. He is not far away in heaven. He is close. Very close.
When you fall down and it hurts, Jesus sees you. When you feel sad, Jesus sees you. He is a good, good big Brother.
Is that not wonderful?
Talk About It
When are you sometimes a little scared? What could you say to Jesus then?
Jesus calls you His little brother or little sister. How does that feel?
Praying Together
Dear Jesus,
Thank You that You came down. Thank You that You know me. When I am scared, will You be close? I am so glad You are my big Brother.
Amen.

What others discovered
Notice who is standing beside the witnesses: "God also testifying with them." The first preachers were not left to carry the message alone on the strength of their eloquence. God added his own voice to theirs.
And then, "according to his own will." Not according to our preference for which gift, which proof, which timing. He decides how he speaks. Are you willing to receive the witness he chooses to give?
Notice the word "suffered." Temptation was not something Jesus brushed off lightly. It hurt. He felt the pull all the way to the end, which is further than most of us go, since we usually give in long before. So when you come to him ashamed, you are not describing something foreign to him. "He is able to help those who are tempted.
You made him a little lower than the angels. You crowned him with glory and honor." Notice the order. The lowering comes first, then the crown. Jesus went down before he was lifted up, and he did it wearing your flesh. Whatever low place you are standing in today, it is not the last word spoken over you.
