Hosea 10

The Explanation
Long ago, there was a land full of grapes. Big, juicy grapes, hanging on curly vines. The sun made them sweet. The people had lots of grapes. Lots and lots.
But something was wrong. The people took stones. Cold, gray stones. They built little altars to pray to the stones. Not to God. To stones.
God saw it. He saw their hearts, and their hearts were split. Half loved God. Half loved stones. God was sad. Very sad.
What Does This Mean?
God said, "Those altars will fall." Crash. Down they would go. Weeds would grow where the stones used to stand. Thorns and thistles, prickly and sharp.
The people thought a king could save them. But a king cannot fix a broken heart. Only God can do that.
God wanted their whole heart. Not half. All of it. Like a whole loaf of bread, not just a crumb.
The Common Thread
God did not only talk about breaking. He talked about growing, too.
"Sow good seeds," God said. "Plow the hard ground." Hard ground is like a heart that forgot God. It needs to be broken open, soft again.
Then God's rain would come. Good rain, kind rain, falling down like a gift.
This is what Jesus does. He softens hard hearts. He makes them whole, not split. Jesus is the rain God promised, gentle and good.

Do you ever love two things at once? Maybe you love God, but you also love being first. Or love God, but hold on to a toy too tight.
God wants your whole heart. Not a heart cut in two pieces. He wants all of you, like a big warm hug, not half a hug.
You can whisper to God right now. "Here is my heart. All of it." He is listening. He always listens.
