Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
Listen. A long, long time ago, God had a big family. His children lived in a beautiful land. God loved them very much. He gave them food. He gave them a house. He gave them everything.
But something sad happened. God's children forgot about God. They did not listen anymore. They did naughty things. And they did not want to say sorry.
God was sad. Very sad. He said, "Look! A cow knows who feeds him. A little donkey knows his master. But my children do not know Me anymore."
The people still went to church. They brought God pretty gifts. They sang songs. But their hearts were not with God. Their hands did mean things. They were not kind to poor people. They were not kind to children without a mommy or daddy.
God said, "I do not want your pretty gifts. I want your heart."
What Does This Mean?
Then God said something wonderful. Listen carefully.
God said, "Come. Come to Me. Your heart is dirty like red paint. But I can wash it. I can make it white like snow. As white as snow!"
Isn't that amazing? God did not stay angry. God wanted to wash His children clean. He wanted them back.
The Common Thread
Do you know who can really wash hearts clean? Jesus!
Jesus is God's Son. Jesus came to earth for us. He loves you very much. When you do something wrong, you can go to Jesus. You can say, "Jesus, I am sorry."
And then Jesus washes your heart. All clean. As white as snow. Softer than a little lamb. Cleaner than fresh laundry on the line.
God does not want pretty gifts from you. God wants YOU. Your heart. Your little hands. Your voice.
For You
Sometimes you do something that is not nice. Maybe you hit your brother. Maybe you said a mean word. Maybe you did not want to share.
Then your heart feels yucky inside. A little dark. A little sad.
But listen. You can tell God. You can say, "God, I did something wrong." And God listens. God is not too busy. God bends down close to you.
And God says, "Come, my child. I will wash you clean. As white as snow."
Then your heart feels light again. Happy. Clean.
You can do that today. And tomorrow. And every day. God is always ready to listen.

Dear God,
Thank You that You listen to me.
Sometimes I do things that are not nice.
I am sorry, God.
