Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
Once there was a man. His name was James. James loved Jesus very much. James wrote a letter. A long letter, with lots of words.
He wrote it for people far away. People who felt sad sometimes. People who had a hard time.
James wrote: "Do you feel sad? Do things go wrong? Then hold on. God is close by. He helps you."
And James wrote something else. Something important. "Do you not know what to do? Then ask God! Just ask. God gives lots and lots. He does not get angry."
James also said: "God is good. Only good. All the beautiful things come from Him. The sun. The flowers. Your mommy. Your daddy. Everything good comes from God."
What Does This Mean?
God listens. Really listens. When you do not know something, you can ask Him. When you feel sad, you can tell Him.
And listen carefully now. James says something funny. He says: your ears are important! Listen well. First listen, then talk. First listen to God.
That is like when Daddy or Mommy tells you something. You listen first. Then you know what to do.
The Common Thread
James had a big brother. Do you know who his brother was? Jesus! Yes, really. James grew up with Jesus.
James saw how Jesus lived. Jesus helped people. Jesus listened. Jesus loved everyone.
And now James writes: you can do that too. Because Jesus lives in your heart. Then you become a little bit like Jesus.

Do you know what is nice? You can talk to God. Right now. In your own words.
Do you feel sad? Tell God. Are you scared? Tell God. Are you happy? Tell God too!
And you can listen. Listen to Daddy. Listen to Mommy. Listen when someone reads from the Bible. That is how you hear God.
Sometimes you get angry. Very angry. Your face turns red. James says: wait a little. Take a deep breath. Do not shout right away. First be quiet. Then you can talk again.
That is hard. Very hard. But God helps you. Really. Just ask Him.
And do you see the sun today? That is a gift from God. Do you see a flower? A gift from God. Your teddy bear? A gift. Everything good comes from Him. You can say: thank You, God!

But let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position." Notice what James doesn't say. He doesn't tell the poor believer to wait for better days. He tells him to boast now, because in Christ he is already lifted high. What would change in you today if you truly believed your low place was actually your high one?
The anger of man doesn't produce the righteousness of God." James doesn't say your anger is always wrong. He says it cannot do what you hope it will. That heated reply, that speech you rehearse in the shower, it feels like justice. But it plants nothing good in the other person. Be slow. Listen first.
A wave looks powerful. It crashes, it roars. But it never goes anywhere it chose. "He who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed." James isn't scolding your honest questions. He's naming the ache of praying while quietly expecting nothing. Ask for wisdom, then wait like someone who will be answered.
Of his own will he gave birth to us by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures."
Notice: he chose this. You did not stumble into being his child. Before you ever reached for him, he was already giving birth to you through his word. And first fruits? That means you are the beginning of something, not the leftovers. He sees you as the promise of a greater harvest still to come.
