John 2

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

There was a party. A big party! Two people were getting married. Everyone was happy. There was music. There was food. And there was wine to drink.

Jesus was there too. His mother Mary came. And His friends came with Him.

But then something went wrong. The wine was all gone! No more wine to drink. Oh no. What now?

Mary walked to Jesus. She said softly, "There is no more wine."

Jesus looked at her. Then Mary said to the helpers, "Do whatever Jesus tells you."

In the corner stood six big stone jars. Really big! As tall as you. Jesus said to the helpers, "Fill the jars with water."

So the helpers went to work. They poured and poured. Until the jars were full to the top.

Then Jesus said, "Now scoop some out. Bring it to the boss of the party."

The boss took a sip. His eyes went wide. "Mmm!" he said. "This is the very best wine!"

But it had been water! Jesus had made the water into wine. Delicious wine. So the party could go on.

What Does This Mean?

Jesus did something no one else can do. Just like that, water became wine. That is called a miracle.

Jesus can do that, because Jesus is God's Son. He is strong. He is good. And He cares when things go wrong.

Mary knew: Jesus can help. And Jesus did help. He made the party happy again.

The Common Thread

Do you know what is so beautiful? Jesus does not just give a little bit. He gives a LOT. Those jars were huge. And the wine was the very best.

That is how Jesus is. He gives good things. Full and to the top.

Later Jesus went to God's big house, the temple. There people were selling and yelling. That made Jesus sad. God's house is for praying, not for a market. So Jesus said, "Stop! This is my Father's house!"

Jesus loves His Father. And His Father loves Him. That Father is God.

For You

Have you ever run out of something? Maybe no more juice. Or no more cookies. Then you go to Mommy or Daddy.

Mary went to Jesus. She trusted Him. You can do that too. When you are sad, tell Jesus. When you are happy, tell Jesus. When something is gone, tell Jesus.

Jesus listens. Jesus is good. And Jesus is strong.

Talk About It

What do you think the helpers thought when the water turned into wine?

What do you want to tell Jesus today?

Praying Together

Dear Lord Jesus,

You are strong. You are good. You made water into wine. Thank You that You listen when I talk to You. Thank You that You love me. Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 9

The steward tasted the water become wine and "didn't know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew)." Notice who gets to be in on the miracle. Not the important guest at the table, but the ones with wet hands and tired arms. Jesus lets the servants see what the master misses. If you feel unseen in your obedience today, remember: the ones who fill the jars are the ones who witness the wonder.
