Judges 2
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
Long, long ago, God's people lived in a new land. God had helped them so much. He brought them out of Egypt. He gave them fields, and houses, and wells.
One day, an angel came to see them. The angel had a message from God. The people listened.
"I promised to help you," the angel said. "But you did not listen to me."
The people felt sad. Very sad. They cried loud tears. They called that place Bochim. That means "crying place."
Then something happened. The people who knew God, they grew old. One by one, they went to be with God. Even Joshua, the leader, he grew old too. He died when he was very old.
And then, a new little generation grew up. Little boys. Little girls. They grew big. But nobody told them about God. Nobody told them what God had done.
What Does This Mean?
So what did the new people do? They forgot God. They bowed down to other gods, called Baal. Wooden gods. Stone gods. Gods that could not see, or hear, or help.
God saw this. God's heart was sad. And God's heart was angry too.
Bad things happened to the people. Enemies came. They took their sheep. They took their bread. The people were scared. Very scared.
The Common Thread
But listen. God did not leave them alone.
God sent helpers. They were called judges. Strong men and women who loved God. The judges saved the people from their enemies.
While the judge was alive, things were good. But when the judge died, the people forgot again. They turned back to the wooden gods.
Over and over this happened. God kept sending help. God kept saving them. Because God's people kept crying out, and God kept hearing.
That is what God is like. He does not stop loving, even when we forget him. Later, God sent the biggest helper of all. His name was Jesus. Jesus does not die like the judges did. Jesus lives forever. He saves us forever too.

What others discovered
They heard the rebuke and "the people lifted up their voice, and wept." Real tears. Then they named the place Weeping, offered sacrifice, and went right back to living beside the altars they were told to tear down. Sorrow is not the same as surrender. What have you cried over, more than once, without ever letting go of it?
They abandoned Yahweh, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth." Notice the two verbs. Leaving God was not the end of worship, it was the start of another one. Baal promised rain and harvest, things they could see. No heart stays empty. What have you quietly begun serving since you stopped bringing that thing to God?
The angel comes up from Gilgal, where Israel first camped in the land, and God's first words are not accusation but memory: "I brought you up from Egypt... I will never break my covenant with you." He rehearses his own faithfulness before He names their failure. That is how God still approaches you. He begins with what He has done, not with what you ruined.
