Judges 3

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

The people of Israel forgot God. Long ago, they promised to love only Him.

But now? They looked at other gods. Little statues, made of stone and wood. Not real. Not alive.

Israel forgot Yahweh, who made the sky and the sea. Who heard them, when they cried.

A mean king came. His name was Eglon. He was very fat, and very proud. He made Israel serve him. For eighteen long years.

Israel felt sad. Israel felt stuck. So they cried out to God.

Did God hear them? Yes. He always hears.

What Does This Mean?

God sent a man named Ehud. Ehud had a secret. A sword, sharp and small, hidden under his coat.

Ehud went to see King Eglon. "I have a message from God," Ehud said.

The king stood up to listen. Right then, Ehud was quick. Very quick. And King Eglon's mean rule was over.

Ehud ran to the hills. He blew a trumpet. Loud! Loud! Everyone came running.

"Follow me!" Ehud shouted. "God has given us the win!"

And they did win. Israel was free again.

The Common Thread

Every time, it was the same. Israel forgot God. Israel got stuck. Israel cried out.

And every time, God sent someone. Othniel. Ehud. Even Shamgar, with just a stick for oxen, who beat six hundred men.

God always sent a rescuer. Someone to save His people.

One day, God would send the best Rescuer of all. His name is Jesus. Jesus rescues us too, not from a king, but from everything bad inside us.

God never stopped listening. Not once. Not ever.

For You

Do you ever forget God? Everyone does sometimes.

But you can always talk to Him. Just like Israel did. You can say, "God, please help me."

He hears little voices too. Yours, right now, on this page.

He is not too busy. He is not too far. He is near.

Talk About It

Why did Israel feel stuck and sad?

What did God do when they cried out to Him?

Praying Together

Dear God, Sometimes I forget You too. Thank You for always listening. Thank You for sending help. Thank You for Jesus. Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 18

When he had finished offering the tribute, he sent away the people who bore the tribute." Ehud does the expected thing first. He pays. He waits. Only when the crowd is gone does the real work begin.
