Leviticus 11

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

God talked to Moses. And to Aaron too.

He said: I want to tell you something.

Some animals, you may eat. Some, you may not.

Cows, you may eat. Sheep, you may eat.

But a pig? No. Not a pig.

Fish with scales, yes. But not everything from the water.

God gave a big long list. Birds too. Little bugs too.

Some yes. Some no.

Moses listened. Aaron listened. All the people listened.

What Does This Mean?

Why did God make a list like that?

Not because pigs are bad. Not because fish are bad.

God made every animal. Every single one.

But God wanted His people to stop, before they ate.

To think: this food is not just food.

God said, I am picking you out. You are mine.

Like a mommy who picks special clothes for a special day.

Not because the other clothes are dirty. But today is different.

Today is holy.

God said it Himself: "I am holy." Look at verse 44.

He wanted His people to be a little bit like Him.

Careful. Clean. Set apart.

The Common Thread

Later, after a very long time, Jesus came.

Jesus ate bread. Jesus ate fish.

Jesus touched sick people. He touched people nobody else would touch.

And guess what? Jesus did not become dirty.

No. The sick people became clean. Just by His touch.

Jesus makes clean, from the inside.

Not by a list of food anymore. But by loving Him.

That is the good news for us today.

For You

Do you ever wash your hands before you eat?

Your mommy says, wash first, then eat.

You do not really know why. But you trust her.

That is a little bit like this story.

God's people did not always understand every rule.

But they trusted God. Because God loves them.

You can trust God too. Even when you do not understand everything.

He is good. He knows what is best.

And when you love Jesus, He makes your heart clean.

Clean all the way through.

Talk About It

Can you think of a rule at home that you do not understand, but you still obey because you trust the one who made it?

What do you think it means that Jesus can make someone clean just by touching them?

Praying Together

Dear God,

You are holy. You are good.

Thank You that Jesus makes me clean.

Help me trust You, even when I do not understand.

I love You.

Amen.

What others discovered

Insight Editorial on verse 44

Notice where God put holiness: in the kitchen. Not only in the tent of meeting, but in what Israel ate three times a day. "Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy; for I am holy." Ordinary meals became a quiet reminder of whose they were. What small, daily thing of yours could carry that same weight?

Insight Editorial on verse 6

The hare, because it chews the cud but doesn't have a parted hoof, it is unclean to you." One mark right, the other missing. Israel learned to notice both, what an animal takes in and how it walks. A strange lesson that still lands. You can chew on the word daily and still walk a road that doesn't match it. Which one is your life telling?

Insight Editorial on verse 16

The ostrich, the owl, the seagull, and the hawk after its kind. Strange company to find in Scripture. God names creatures of the wilderness, the night, the restless sea. He knows them all by kind, even the ones His people must not eat.

Nothing escapes His notice. Not the owl in the dark, not you in yours.
