Leviticus 18

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

God spoke softly to Moses. Moses stood very still and listened.

"I am Yahweh, your God," God said.

Long ago, the people lived in Egypt. In Egypt, families did not treat each other well. Now God's people were going to a new land, called Canaan. There too, families hurt each other.

But God said, "Not you. You are mine."

God gave many rules about families. Rules about being gentle with mothers and fathers. Rules about honoring sisters and brothers. Rules about never hurting the ones you live with, the ones who sleep under your roof.

"Keep my rules," God said. "Walk in them. They will give you life."

What Does This Mean?

God cares about every home. He cares about every mother, every father, every child. No one should be hurt where they should feel safest, at home.

God's rules were like a strong fence around a garden. A fence keeps the flowers safe from being trampled. God's rules kept families safe from being hurt.

God even said the land itself became sick when people were cruel to each other. Like fruit going bad in the sun. God did not want that for His people. He wanted them clean, and safe, and whole.

The Common Thread

Again and again God said, "I am Yahweh your God." He was not far away. He was close, like a father watching his children play in the yard, making sure no one gets hurt.

Later, God sent Jesus. Jesus loved families too. He held children on His lap. He was gentle with the weak and careful with the hurting. Jesus makes hearts clean, not just outsides. He is the fence, and He is the gardener too.

For You

At home, you can be gentle. Gentle hands. Gentle words. Say sorry when you bump your brother. Give hugs, not pinches. God's rules are not to make you sad. They are to keep your home safe and warm, like a blanket on a cold night.

Insight Editorial on verse 15

You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law: she is your son's wife." The reason given is a relationship, not a rule. God guards the young woman who entered that household with no power of her own. Where you have the most influence, you are called to be the safest person in the room, not the hungriest.

Insight Editorial on verse 29

Whoever shall do any of these abominations, even the souls that do them shall be cut off from among their people." Notice the wound God names: not just guilt, but exile. Sin whispers that it is private, your own business, harming no one. Then it quietly separates you from the very people you belong to. What are you keeping secret that is already costing you closeness?
