For children ages 3 to 6

Luke 21

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

Jesus sat in the big temple. He watched people bring money.

Rich people came. Their bags were heavy. Clink, clink, clink went the coins.

Then came a little old woman. She was poor. Very poor.

She had only two small coins. Tiny ones. She gave them both away.

Jesus smiled. He said, "She gave the most of all."

Why? Because she gave everything she had.

What Does This Mean?

Later, Jesus looked at the temple walls. Big stones. Beautiful stones.

"One day," Jesus said, "these stones will fall down."

His friends were surprised. "When will that happen?"

Jesus told them many things. Wars would come. The ground would shake. Some days would be scary days.

But Jesus said, "Don't be afraid."

He said, "Not one hair on your head will be lost."

That is a strange thing to say. But Jesus meant it. He watches over every single hair.

The Common Thread

Jesus told about trees too. "Look at the fig tree," he said.

When little leaves come out, summer is near.

Jesus said it is the same with him. When hard things happen, he is coming closer, not further away.

He is like summer after winter. He is coming back.

Jesus said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will by no means pass away."

His words stay. Always. Like a rock that never moves.

Every day Jesus taught in the temple. Every night he went to a quiet mountain to sleep.

In the morning, people came early. They wanted to hear him again.

They liked being near him. So they came back.

For You

You can be like that poor woman. You can give something small to Jesus. Even a little thing.

You can be like the people who came early. You can come to Jesus too. Every day.

When something feels scary, like thunder, or the dark, you can remember. Jesus said, "Don't be afraid."

He watches over you. Every hair on your head. Even the small ones.

Talk About It

What did the poor woman give to Jesus?

What did Jesus say about your hair, that shows he watches over you closely?

Praying Together

Dear Jesus,

Thank you that you watch over me.

Even the small things about me matter to you.

Help me not to be afraid.

I want to come to you, every day.

Amen.

What others discovered

Insight Editorial on verse 12

Notice the order. They asked about the end of the world, and Jesus says, "But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you." Before the sky changes, your life will. And he names the reason: "for my name's sake." Whatever you lose, you do not lose it randomly. It is spent on a Name he knows by heart.

Insight Editorial on verse 34

Notice the strange company in Jesus' list: "carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life." We would never set worry beside drunkenness. Yet both dull us. Both make the heart heavy and slow to look up. The bills you rehearse at 3am can numb you to God as surely as any bottle. What is weighing yours tonight?
