Mark 15

The Explanation
It was early in the morning. The sun was just coming up. Jesus was tired. He had not slept all night. Bad men had caught Him. They took Him to a man called Pilate.
Pilate was the boss. He looked at Jesus. He asked, "Are You the King?"
Jesus said yes. But Jesus was quiet after that. He did not shout. He did not run away.
Around Pilate stood many people. They were angry. They shouted very loud. "Away with Him! Away with Him!"
Pilate did not know what to do. So he let the soldiers take Jesus. The soldiers were not kind. Not kind at all.
What Does This Mean?
They put a crown on Jesus' head. But it was not a nice crown. It was a crown made of thorns. Thorns are sharp, like pricks. Ouch, it hurt.
They gave Jesus a big, heavy piece of wood. It was a cross. Jesus had to carry it. He walked and walked. But the wood was so heavy. So another man helped Him carry it. His name was Simon.
Then they came to a hill. And there, on that hill, Jesus died on the cross.
The sky went dark. In the middle of the day! Very dark. And very quiet.
The Common Thread
Why did Jesus do this? Why did He not run away?
Listen carefully.
Jesus did it for us. For you and for me. Everything we do wrong, all the naughty things, all the sad things, Jesus took them with Him to the cross. Like a big backpack full of stones. Heavy, so heavy. Jesus carried it. So we do not have to carry it anymore.
Jesus is the very best King. A King who loves. A King who helps. Even when it hurt so much.
And guess what? This is not the end of the story. After three days something wonderful happened. But that comes later.
For You
Sometimes you do something that is not nice. You hit. Or you say an ugly word. Or you do not want to share.
Then you can go to Jesus. You can say, "Jesus, sorry."
And do you know what Jesus does? He is not angry. He hugs you close. Because He already carried it all. On the cross. For you.
Jesus loves you. Very, very much. More than anyone else.

Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead." Crucifixion usually took days. Jesus went in hours, because no one took his life from him, he laid it down. So Pilate calls the centurion, the professional in death, to confirm it. Your salvation rests on a death signed off by Rome itself. He really died. For you.
They knelt. Soldiers dropped to their knees before a bleeding man, and every gesture was a joke to them: "bowing their knees, did homage to him." But they were acting out something truer than they knew. The mockery was a rehearsal. One day those knees bend again, and no one will be laughing. What do your knees say when no one is watching?
For he perceived that the chief priests had delivered him up because of envy."
Pilate saw it. The religious leaders, guardians of the temple, were driven by envy. Jesus threatened their standing, their crowds, their influence.
Envy still wears religious robes. When someone else's ministry grows, someone else's gift shines, does something twist in you? The same sin that crucified Christ can hide in the most spiritual heart.
Simon of Cyrene was just passing by. He "was coming from the country" when soldiers grabbed him and forced the cross onto his shoulders. He had plans that day. None of them involved Jesus.
Yet Mark remembers his sons, Alexander and Rufus, by name. That interrupted walk became the story his family told for generations.
The cross you did not choose to carry today may be the very thing your children remember you for.
