Matthew 6

The Explanation

Jesus looked up. A little bird flew by, flapping fast. Jesus smiled and pointed.

"Look at that bird," Jesus said. "It does not plant seeds. It does not build a barn. It does not save food in a jar. But it always has enough to eat. Your Father in heaven feeds it."

The bird landed on a branch and sang.

Jesus pointed at flowers growing near the road, red and yellow, swaying softly in the wind.

"Look at the flowers," Jesus said. "They do not sew clothes. They do not spin thread. But look how pretty they are. Even a king, dressed in his finest robe, was not as beautiful as one of these."

The children leaned close to smell the flowers. So soft. So bright. So good.

What Does This Mean?

"Your Father knows what you need," Jesus said, "before you even ask him."

That is why Jesus taught them how to pray. Not loud, shouting words in the street. Simple words, said quietly, to someone who already loves you.

"Our Father in heaven," Jesus prayed. "Let your name be kept holy. Give us bread today. Forgive us, like we forgive others. Keep us safe."

Just a few words. Said softly. In a small room. With the door shut tight.

The Common Thread

For You

Jesus says, look at the birds outside your window. Look at the flowers in the garden. God takes care of them every single day. He takes care of you even more.

Tonight, when you eat your bread, you can whisper thank you. When you are tucked in bed, you can whisper to the Father. Not loud, just quiet. He hears you anyway. He always hears you.
