Numbers 1

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

Far away, in the desert, there was a big camp. So many tents. Tents as far as you could see.

In the middle of the camp stood one special tent. God lived there.

One day God spoke to Moses. Right there, by the special tent. God said, "Moses, count my people. Every man. Go tent by tent."

So Moses went. And Aaron went with him. They walked and walked. Tent after tent after tent.

From the tribe of Reuben, they counted. From the tribe of Simeon, they counted. From Judah, from Dan, from Asher, from all the tribes. Twelve tribes in all.

They counted so many people. So very many. More than you could ever count on your fingers. More than all the stars you can see at night.

What Does This Mean?

Why did God want them counted? Because God knew every single one. Not just a big crowd. Not just a number. Every man had a name. Elizur. Nahshon. Ahira. God knew them all.

God was getting His people ready. Ready to walk together through the desert. Ready to go where God would lead them.

But one tribe was not counted like the others. The tribe of Levi. God gave them a different job. The Levites took care of the special tent. They carried it. They set it up. They took it down. And when the camp slept, the Levites slept close by, all around the tent, keeping watch.

The Common Thread

The special tent was where God lived among His people. Right in the middle of the camp. Not far away. Close by.

God has always wanted to be close to His people. Later, God came even closer. He sent Jesus. Jesus did not stay far away in a tent. Jesus walked among people, ate with them, touched them, knew their names too.

For You

God knew every man in that big desert camp. He knows you too. Your name, your face, the way you laugh.

You are not just one of many. You are you. God sees you.

Tonight, when you lie in your bed, remember the big camp in the desert. Remember the tent in the middle. Remember that God was there, watching over everyone, counting them one by one, loving each one.

Talk About It

If God knew the name of every man in the desert, do you think He knows your name too?

Why do you think God wanted His special tent right in the middle of the camp?

Praying Together

Dear God, thank You that You know my name. Thank You that You are never far away. Stay close to me, just like You stayed close to Your people in the desert. Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 24

According to the number of the names" is a strange way to count an army. Names, not just heads. God had Moses number the ones ready for war, but He kept their names attached, each one known, none blurred into a total.

You may feel like a statistic in a crowded world. Heaven has your name on the list.
