Numbers 9

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

Long ago, God's people lived in the desert. Tents everywhere. Sand under their feet. Sun hot by day. Stars cold and bright by night.

God said to Moses, "Let my people eat the special meal." The meal was called Passover. Flat bread, no yeast in it. Green bitter herbs beside it. Roasted meat too.

The people did just what God said. In the evening, when the sky turned orange, they ate together.

But some men could not eat. Not that day. They had touched a body. A dead body. So they were not clean. Not ready.

They came to Moses. They asked, "Why can't we eat too?"

Moses said, "Wait here. I will ask God."

What Does This Mean?

God answered. God said, "Let them wait one month. Then they can eat the meal too." God did not forget them. God made room for them.

God said more. "Do not break a bone of the meat. Do not leave food until morning." Careful words. Because this meal was special. It helped them remember. God had saved them, long ago, out of Egypt.

The Common Thread

Every night, something wonderful sat over God's tent. A cloud. Soft and gray in the sunlight. At night it glowed, like fire, warm and bright.

When the cloud lifted, the people packed up. They walked. When the cloud stayed still, they stayed still too. One day. Ten days. Even a whole year. They watched the cloud. They followed the cloud.

God was with them. Every single day. Every single night. Leading them, like a shepherd leads his sheep.

Much later, another light shone. A star, over a stable in Bethlehem. It pointed to a baby. Jesus. He came to save people, just like that Passover meal remembered saving.

For You

Do you ever wonder which way to go? God's people did not have to guess. They just looked up. They watched the cloud.

You can watch for God too. Maybe not a cloud. But God still leads you, little step by little step. Like holding a hand in the dark.

And when you cannot do everything just right, remember those men. God made room for them. God still makes room for you.

Talk About It

What did the cloud look like at night?

How did the people know when to walk, and when to stay?

Praying Together

Dear God, thank You for watching over me. Thank You for leading me, just like the cloud. Help me follow You, one small step at a time. Amen.
