Song of Solomon 2

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

Listen. In the Bible is a very special song. A song about two people who love each other so much. A boy and a girl. They sing about each other.

The girl sings first. She says: "I am like a little flower in the field. A pretty flower." And the boy sings back: "Yes! You are the prettiest flower of all. All the other flowers look like thorns next to you."

Then the girl looks at the boy. She smiles. She says: "And you? You are like a big apple tree. I sit under your branches. It is nice and cool there. And your apples are sooo sweet."

The boy takes her to a big room. There is food. There is music. He puts his arm around her. She feels safe. Very safe.

What Does This Mean?

Then, listen! The girl hears something. Feet! Someone is running! Jumping over the hills! Skipping like a little deer!

It is the boy. He comes to her house. He peeks through the window. He calls softly: "Come outside! Come with me!"

"Look," he says. "The winter is over. No more cold. No more rain. Look at all the flowers! Listen to the birds singing! Smell the little figs on the tree. It is spring! Come, come with me!"

The girl smiles big. Because he came. He came just for her.

The Common Thread

Do you know what is so special? God loves us like that too. Just like the boy in the song loves the girl.

God says to you: "Come! Come to Me!"

And later, God sent Jesus. Jesus came running to us. Just like the boy jumped over the hills. Jesus came all the way down to earth. Because He wanted to be with us. He loves us so much.

The winter is over. Spring is coming. Jesus makes everything new.

For You

Can you hear it? Jesus calls you too. Very softly. He says: "Come, you are precious to Me. You are My beautiful little flower."

Isn't that nice? You do not have to do anything hard. You may just come. Just like you are.

And you know what? You may love Jesus back. You may say: "Jesus is mine. And I am His."

Say it after me, very softly: "Jesus is mine. And I am His."

That is the most beautiful song of all.

Talk About It

What do you think the boy sees when he peeks through the window at the girl?

Jesus thinks you are very precious. How does that make you feel inside?

Praying Together

Dear Jesus,

Thank You that You love me. Thank You that I am precious to You. I am Yours, and You are mine. Thank You for the flowers and the birds. Thank You that You came to me.

Amen.

What others discovered

Insight Editorial on verse 12

He doesn't say spring is coming. He says, "The flowers appear on the earth. The time of the singing has come." It is already here. The blossoms opened while she was still bracing for cold.

Some of us need a voice outside our own to point out what God has already started. What has quietly begun in your life that you have not let yourself notice yet?

Insight Editorial on verse 7

She speaks it from the safest place, resting in his arms, "his left hand is under my head, his right hand embraces me." And from there she warns her friends: "that you not stir up, nor awaken love, until it so desires." Even love must not be hurried. What are you trying to shake awake before its hour has come?

Insight Editorial on verse 6

His left hand is under my head. His right hand embraces me." Notice she is not running to him or performing for him. She is simply being held. Sometimes love looks like stillness, letting yourself be cradled. When was the last time you let God hold you without earning it first?
