Zechariah 9

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

Listen. A long time ago there was a prophet. His name was Zechariah. God gave him a very special message. And that message was about a King.

Not just any king. A very special King.

Zechariah looked ahead. He saw something with his heart. He saw a city called Jerusalem. And he heard God say: "Cheer, city! Cheer loudly! Because look… your King is coming!"

Do you know how kings usually come? On a big horse. With a shiny sword. With soldiers all around. Loud and strong.

But this King? He came very differently. He came on a little donkey. A little grey donkey with long ears. Clip, clop, clip, clop, went the donkey's hooves.

The King was not proud. The King was kind. He was little on the outside. But very big on the inside.

What Does This Mean?

God told Zechariah: this King is good. This King brings peace. No more fighting. No more swords. No more bows and arrows. Just peace.

And the King was going to help people. People who were sad. People who were locked up in a deep, dark hole. The King would pull them out. Into the light. Into the sunshine.

The Common Thread

Do you know who that King is?

It is Jesus.

Really. Many, many years later, Jesus came to Jerusalem. And guess what He sat on? Yes. On a little donkey. Clip, clop, clip, clop. Just like Zechariah had seen long ago.

The people cheered. They waved with branches. "Hooray! Our King is coming!" they called.

God had promised it. And God kept His promise. God always keeps His promises. Always.

Jesus is the King who is kind. He is not scary. He came close, on a little donkey. Small enough for children to see. Small enough for you to see.

For You

Imagine you see Jesus coming. On a little donkey. He looks at you. He smiles.

Would you wave? Would you cheer?

You may know: Jesus is your King too. Not a scary king. A kind King. He loves you. He is close by. Just like the donkey walked slowly through the street, Jesus walks slowly with you. Every day.

When you are scared, He is there. When you are sad, He is there. When you are happy, He is there too.

He is a King who says: "Peace. Peace for you."

Talk About It

What do you think it looked like when Jesus came on a little donkey?

Jesus is a kind King. What do you want to tell Him?

Praying Together

Dear Jesus,

You are a King. But not a scary King. You are kind. You came on a little donkey. Clip, clop, clip, clop.

Thank You that You are close. Thank You that You love me. Please give peace in my heart.

Amen.

What others discovered

Insight Editorial on verse 4

Tyre built herself a stronghold, "heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets" (Zechariah 9:3). Then verse 4: "Behold, the Lord will dispossess her, and he will strike her power in the sea; and she will be devoured with fire."

What you trust to keep you safe can be taken in a moment. Tyre's walls, her wealth, her sea, none of it held. What have you quietly heaped up, hoping it will save you?

Insight Editorial on verse 16

Zechariah pictures God saving His people "as the flock of his people; for they are like the jewels of a crown, lifted on high over his land." Notice the shift. One moment you are a sheep, dusty and prone to wander. The next, you are a jewel set in a crown, catching the light. God does not just rescue you. He wears you. When you feel forgettable today, remember where He has placed you.
