The Explanation

David stood in Hebron. All the people came to him. They said, "You are our own family."

They gave David a crown. Now David was king.

David went to a big city. The city was called Jebus. Strong walls were all around it. Other people lived there. They said, "You will not come in!"

But David went in. He took the city. He called it his own city. David's city.

David grew strong. Bigger and stronger every day. God was with him.

What Does This Mean?

David had brave friends. Very brave. His three strongest friends went to a well. Enemy soldiers were all around it. The friends were not scared. They ran through, fast fast fast. They got water. Cold, clear water. They brought it to David.

David looked at the water. He did not drink it. "This water is too precious," David said. "You risked your lives for it." He poured it out for God instead.

One friend, Benaiah, met a lion. In a deep pit. On a snowy day. Benaiah was not scared. He fought the lion. He won.

The Common Thread

David was a shepherd once. He watched sheep in the fields. Now God made him a shepherd for all the people.

Many years later, another shepherd would come. Gentle, and strong too. His name was Jesus. He would take care of His people, just like David did.

David had friends who protected him with their lives. Jesus loves us even more than that. He gave His life for us.

Do you have someone who takes care of you? Someone strong, who loves you?

David's friends were brave because they loved him. You can be brave too. Even when something feels scary, like the dark, or a big dog. You are not alone. God is with you, just like He was with David.
