1 Corinthians 12

The Explanation

Long ago there was a man named Paul. Paul had a pen and some paper. He sat and he wrote and he wrote. He was writing a letter to people far away. People who loved Jesus.

And in his letter, Paul wrote something funny. He wrote about a body. About your body!

Look at your hand. Wiggle your fingers. One, two, three, four, five.

Now look at your foot. Wiggle your toes too.

Your hand is not your foot. Your hand cannot walk. Your foot cannot hold a spoon. But they both belong to you.

Paul said: imagine the foot could talk. Imagine the foot said, "I am not a hand. So I do not belong here." Silly foot! Of course you belong. Who else would walk?

And imagine the ear said, "I am not an eye. So I do not belong here." Silly ear! Of course you belong. Who else would hear the birds?

What Does This Mean?

Now think about a whole body made only of eyes. Just eyes, everywhere. That body could see. But it could not hear anything. Not one single sound.

And a body made only of ears? It could hear. But it could not smell warm bread.

So God did not make us like that. God made a body with lots of different parts. He put every part exactly where He wanted it. Eyes up high, to look. Feet down low, to run. Ears on the side, to listen.

And the eye may never say to the hand, "I do not need you." Because the eye does need the hand. Every part needs the others.

The Common Thread

Then Paul wrote the best part.

All the people who love Jesus are like one body together. Jesus is their Head. And they are His hands and His feet and His ears.

One person can sing beautifully. One person is good at helping. One person tells about Jesus. One person prays for someone who is sick. All different! But all together, one body. Jesus holds them together.

And when one part is sad, everybody is a little sad. And when one part is happy, everybody cheers. That is how it works in a body.

For You

You are little. But you belong too.

You have two hands. You can give a hug. You can pass the plate. You can bring a drink to Grandma.

You have a mouth. You can sing. You can say sorry. You can say, "Jesus is Lord." Do you know who helps you say that? God's own Spirit. He whispers it into your heart.

You have feet. You can walk to church, where all the other parts are.

Nobody is too small. Nobody is left out. God put you exactly where He wanted you.

Praying Together

Dear God,

Thank You for my hands.

Thank You for my feet.

Thank You for my ears and my eyes.

Thank You that I belong to Jesus.

Help me help somebody today.
