1 Thessalonians 3
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
Paul had friends. Very special friends. They lived far, far away, in a town called Thessalonica. Paul missed them a lot.
Paul was worried. Would his friends still love Jesus? Some people were mean to them. Very mean. Paul thought and thought about it.
So Paul said to Timothy: "Timothy, will you go? Go to my friends. Tell them I love them. Help them believe in Jesus."
And Timothy went. It was a long, long journey.
Paul waited. And waited. And waited some more.
Then, one day, Timothy came back! Paul ran to meet him. "Timothy! How are my friends?"
And Timothy smiled a big smile. "Paul, your friends still love Jesus! They still remember you. They want to see you again!"
Oh, Paul was so happy. So very, very happy. He almost jumped for joy.
What Does This Mean?
Paul was sad first. Then Paul was glad. Do you know why he was so glad? Because his friends still loved Jesus.
Paul thanked God. He said: "Thank You, God! Thank You, thank You, thank You!"
Then Paul folded his hands. Every night, every day, he prayed for his friends. He prayed: "Dear God, help them love each other. Help their hearts stay close to You."
The Common Thread
Paul loved his friends. But you know Who loves them even more? Jesus.
Jesus never forgets His friends. Not one. Not ever. When it is dark, Jesus is there. When people are mean, Jesus is there. Jesus holds His friends tight.
And Jesus is coming back one day. That is a big promise. Then everyone who loves Him will see Him with their own eyes.
For You
Do you have a friend? Maybe at church. Maybe next door. Maybe a grandma who lives far away.
You can pray for your friend too. Just like Paul did. You can fold your hands and say: "Dear God, please take care of my friend."
And do you know what makes Jesus smile? When you are kind. When you share your cookie. When you give a hug. That is love. And love makes hearts strong.
So today, be like Paul. Think of someone. Pray for them. And be kind, even when it is hard.
Talk About It
Who is your special friend? Shall we pray for them together?
Paul was so happy when he heard good news. What makes you really, really happy?
Praying Together
Dear Jesus,
Thank You for my friends. Thank You for my family. Please help them love You. Please help me be kind. And thank You that You love me, always.
Amen.

What others discovered
Paul had been sick with worry. He sent Timothy to find out whether that young church had survived the pressure. And the report that healed him said nothing about crowds or success. Timothy "brought us glad news of your faith and love." If someone checked on you this week, is that the news they would carry back?
Paul wanted to go back to Thessalonica. He tried. He couldn't. So he prays, "Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you." Notice what he does with a blocked road: he hands it to God rather than forcing it open. Is there someone you long to reach? Pray the way there before you plan it.
For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord." Feel the weight of that. Paul isn't being dramatic. His life breathes easier because the Thessalonians are holding on to Jesus. Whose faithfulness gives you life like that? And whose heart might quietly steady, or ache, depending on how you stand today?
Paul writes, "Therefore when we couldn't stand it any longer, we thought it good to be left behind at Athens alone." Read that again. He couldn't stand not knowing how they were. Love made him restless. When was the last time someone's spiritual well-being made you unable to sit still? Paul chose loneliness so others could be strengthened. That's love with skin on.
