2 Kings 10

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

In the land of Israel stood a big house. Not a house for people. A house for Baal.

Baal was not a real god. Baal was made of stone. He had eyes, but he could not see. He had a mouth, but he could not talk. Still, many people bowed down for him. They sang for him. They brought him presents. And they forgot the real God.

Long, long before, God had said something. He said it to a man called Elijah. God said: this must stop. King Ahab and his family may not be king anymore. They taught everybody to love Baal.

Now there was a new king. His name was Jehu. Jehu rode fast in his chariot. Rumble, rumble, over the stones of the road. Jehu remembered what God had said. And Jehu did it. King Ahab's family was not king anymore. It was a hard, sad time. Then Jehu said out loud: "Look. What God said, happened."

And then Jehu had a plan for the house of Baal. He called all the people who loved Baal. Come! Come to the big house! And they came. Every single one. The house was full, from wall to wall.

But Jehu did not come for Baal. Jehu came to break Baal down. And that is what he did. The stone pillars, out of the house. Broken. The big house of Baal, gone.

Baal could not stop him. Baal could not do anything at all. Because Baal was never a god.

What Does This Mean?

God said it long, long before. And it came true. God does not forget His words. Not one word of God falls down and gets lost.

And Jehu? He did this one good thing. God saw it, and God said so. But then something sad happened. Jehu had other statues, golden calves, and he let them stay. His hands did something good. But his heart stayed far away from God. God wants our hands and our heart.

The Common Thread

God kept saying it, again and again: I am the only real God. A statue cannot hear you. I can hear you. And later God sent Someone whose heart was all the way His. That was Jesus. Jesus loved His Father with everything He had. Jesus helps us love God with our whole heart too.

For You

You do not have a Baal in your house. But you can talk to the God who really listens. When you whisper "God?", He hears you. Every time. He never sleeps. He never walks away.

Talk About It

Baal had eyes, but he could not see. Can God see you? Where are you right now?

What would you like to tell God today?

Praying Together

Dear God, You are the only real God. You can really hear me. Thank You. I want to love You with my whole heart. Will You help me? Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 10

Jehu stands beside heads piled at a gate and says, "Know now that nothing shall fall to the earth of Yahweh's word." He is right. God's word never drops unfulfilled. Yet later we read that Jehu himself "didn't take heed to walk in the law of Yahweh." You can quote God perfectly and still not follow him. Which am I doing today?
