2 Kings 7

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

In the city of Samaria, everybody was hungry. So hungry.

There was no bread. There was no soup. There was nothing in the cupboards. The mothers had no food for their children. The people sat by the city gate and their tummies rumbled.

Why was there no food? Because outside the city, in tents, lay a big army. Soldiers with horses. They would not let anybody go out to get bread.

Then Elisha came. Elisha listened to God, and God told him something. Elisha said it out loud: "Tomorrow! Tomorrow there will be bread again. Lots of flour, and it will be cheap. Right here, at this gate."

The king's helper laughed. "That can't happen," he said. "Not even if God opened windows in the sky." Elisha looked at him. "You will see it," he said. "But you will not eat it."

What Does This Mean?

Now listen. Outside the gate sat four sick men. Nobody wanted to sit close to them. They were hungry too.

"Let's go to the soldiers' tents," they said. "Maybe they will give us something."

It was almost dark. Evening light. The four men walked slowly to the tents.

And then… it was quiet. Very quiet.

No soldier. No voice. Nobody. The horses stood tied up. The donkeys stood tied up. The tents were still open. But the soldiers were gone!

Do you know why? God had made a sound. A big rumbling sound, like hundreds of horses coming. The soldiers heard it and got scared. They ran away in the dark. They left everything behind. Even their coats lay on the road.

The Common Thread

The four men went into a tent. There was food! They ate. They drank. They found nice things and hid them.

Then one of them stopped chewing. "Wait," he said. "This is good news. And we are keeping it a secret. Everybody in the city is hungry! We have to tell them!"

So they ran back. They knocked at the gate. "Come out! The tents are empty! There is food for everyone!"

The king did not believe it at first. He sent men with horses to look. And it was true. All true.

Then the people streamed out of the gate. They found bread. They found flour. Everybody ate until their tummies were full.

Just like God had said. Exactly like God had said.

And the man who laughed? He stood at the gate. He saw all the bread. But he did not get to eat any.

God said it, and God did it. God always keeps His word.

For You

When you sit at the table today, look at your bread. Who gives you that bread? God does. Every day.

And the four men had good news, and they told it. You can do that too. You can tell somebody, "God is good. God gives us food."

Talk About It

What do you think the four men said when they saw all those empty tents?

Who can you tell that God is good?

Praying Together

Dear God, thank You for bread. Thank You that You keep Your promises. You are strong and You are good. Amen.

What others discovered

Insight Editorial on verse 16

The food was already there. While Samaria starved, the Syrian tents stood full, abandoned in the night. Nothing new was created that morning; the city simply walked out and took what God had already set aside. "So a measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel." What has He already prepared that you are too afraid to go out and receive?

Insight Editorial on verse 15

The road to the Jordan told the whole story: cloaks, weapons, gear flung down mile after mile. "All the way was full of garments and equipment which the Syrians had cast away in their haste." Not one Israelite swung a sword. Sometimes God clears the road while you sleep, and all you find in the morning is the litter of a fear that was never yours to fight.
