Isaiah 7

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

King Ahaz was scared.

Very scared.

Two big armies were coming. His heart was shaking, shaking like leaves in the wind.

But God sent a man named Isaiah. Isaiah took his little boy with him. They went to find the king.

Isaiah had a message from God. "Be careful," God said. "Keep calm. Don't be afraid."

The scary armies were like smoking sticks. They looked fierce. But God said, "It shall not stand."

God was not scared. Not even a little.

What Does This Mean?

God told Ahaz, "Ask me for a sign. Any sign you want."

But Ahaz said, "No. I won't ask."

That was a strange answer. God wanted to show Ahaz something good. Something to make his heart stop shaking.

But Ahaz said no.

Isaiah felt sad. "Isn't it enough," he said, "that you try everyone's patience? Now you try God's patience too."

The Common Thread

Then something wonderful happened.

God gave a sign anyway. Even though Ahaz said no.

Listen closely now.

"A virgin will have a baby," God said. "A little boy. They will call him Immanuel."

Immanuel. Do you know what that name means?

It means "God is with us."

A tiny baby, coming to be with us. Not far away in the sky. Right here. Close.

That baby was Jesus. God kept His promise, a long, long time later.

Even when Ahaz was too scared to trust, even when he said no, God was already planning something good. Something so good it would warm the whole world.

For You

Sometimes you feel scared too. Maybe the room is dark. Maybe you hear a loud noise.

Your heart might shake, just like Ahaz's did.

But God says to you, the same thing He said back then: "Don't be afraid."

He is not far away. His name is Immanuel. God with us. God with you, tonight, in your room, in your bed.

You can talk to Him. You can tell Him you're scared.

He is listening.

Talk About It

When have you felt scared, like Ahaz did?

What does the name Immanuel mean, and why is that a good name for Jesus?

Praying Together

Dear God,

Thank You that You are with us.

Thank You for Jesus, our Immanuel.

When we are scared, help us not to be afraid.

You are close. You are near.

Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 3

God tells Isaiah exactly where to find the king: "at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, on the highway of the fuller's field." That's the water supply. Ahaz was out checking whether his city could survive a siege. God met him mid worry, and sent along a boy named Shear Jashub, "a remnant shall return." A promise with legs, standing right there beside the panic.
