The Explanation
Paul is in a small, dark room. It is a kind of prison. Paul is not a bad man. But bad people locked him up. Paul is old now. And he is tired.
Paul takes a big piece of paper. He wants to write a letter. The letter is for his friend. His friend is named Timothy. Paul loves Timothy very much. Timothy is like a son to him.
Paul writes: "Dear Timothy. I think about you a lot. I pray for you every day. Every night too."
Paul remembers something nice. Timothy's grandma loved God. Her name was Lois. Timothy's mama loved God too. Her name was Eunice. They told Timothy about God. And now Timothy loves God too!
Paul writes: "Timothy, God gave you something special. Do not hide it. Let it shine!"
Then Paul writes something important. "God did not make us scared. God made us strong. God made us kind. God helps us to be brave."
What Does This Mean?
Timothy was sometimes a bit scared. Do you know that feeling? When your tummy feels wobbly? Paul says: "Timothy, you do not have to be scared. God is with you. God makes you strong."
That is a beautiful message. God does not want us to be scared. God wants to help us.
The Common Thread
Paul tells Timothy about Jesus. Jesus is very strong. Jesus is stronger than being scared. Jesus is stronger than the dark. Jesus is even stronger than dying!
Paul says: "Jesus took away all the sad things. Jesus brings light. Jesus brings life."
Isn't that wonderful? Jesus is with Timothy. And Jesus is with you too.
For You
Sometimes you are scared. Maybe of the dark. Or of a big dog. Or when Mama and Papa are not there.
Then you can remember what Paul said. God makes you strong. God is close to you. You can whisper softly: "Jesus, help me." Jesus hears you. Always.
And do you know something else? Just like Timothy's grandma told him about God, someone tells you about God too. Maybe your papa. Maybe your mama. Maybe grandma. That is a big gift. You can say thank you for that.

For which I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher." Paul writes this from a prison cell. He could have introduced himself by his chains, his failing body, the friends who walked away. Instead he names the calling God gave him. What are you calling yourself these days? God may have another name for you.
Paul remembers one thing about Onesiphorus: he "often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain." Being seen beside a prisoner was risky, and he came anyway, again and again. Think of someone whose situation embarrasses the people around them. Would you sit close enough to be linked with them?
Paul writes this from a prison cell, to a young man who seems ready to shrink back. "For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control." Notice love sits right in the middle. Courage without love turns hard and loud. Whatever fear is quieting you today, God's answer is not to make you fierce, but to make you steady.
Paul opens with, "Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, according to the promise of the life which is in Christ Jesus." He is writing from prison, facing death. Yet the very first word about himself is anchored in life, promised life, in Jesus. Chains could not shake that. What are you leaning on today that outlasts your circumstances?
