Acts 12
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
Peter was in prison. A dark little room, with cold walls. Big chains on his hands. Soldiers slept on both sides of him. Peter slept too, right between them.
But outside, in a little house, friends of Peter were awake. They were praying. Softly, together, all through the night. They were praying for Peter.
Then something happened. A bright light shone in the cell. So bright! An angel stood next to Peter. The angel tapped his side. "Stand up quickly!" And look, the chains fell off. Just like that.
"Put on your sandals," said the angel. Peter did. "Put on your cloak. Follow me." Peter followed, but he thought he was dreaming. Past one guard. Past another guard. Then a big iron gate. It opened, all by itself. Peter walked through, out into the street. Then the angel was gone.
Peter blinked. He was really outside! Really free!
What Does This Mean?
Peter walked to the house where his friends were praying. He knocked on the door. Knock, knock, knock. A girl named Rhoda came to listen. She heard his voice. "It's Peter!" She was so happy, she forgot to open the door. She ran back inside instead, shouting.
"You're crazy," they said. But Peter kept knocking. Knock, knock, knock. Finally they opened the door. And there he was. They could hardly believe their eyes.
While they were praying, God was already answering. Even before they saw Peter, God had already sent the angel.
The Common Thread
Herod thought he was very great. He put on his royal clothes and sat on his throne. People shouted that he sounded like a god. But Herod was not God. Only God is truly great.
God heard the prayers of his people. God sent an angel to help Peter. God is the one who saves. That is who he has always been, and still is.
For You
Sometimes you might feel scared too. Maybe the dark, or being alone. You can pray then, just like Peter's friends did. Short and simple. God hears you, even in the night. He is never too busy, and never too far away.
Talk About It
Why do you think Peter thought he was dreaming? What would you say to God if you were scared, like Peter's friends?
Praying Together
Dear God, Thank you that you hear us. Thank you that you see us, even in the dark. Help me to talk to you. Amen.

What others discovered
Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers about what had become of Peter."
Picture the panic at sunrise. Peter is gone, chains still on the floor, guards still at their posts. They cannot explain it, because the answer is not in the room. While they slept, the church was praying, and God walked their prisoner out.
Sometimes the things that shake other people are the very things God has already quietly settled in the night.
