Acts 16
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
Paul had a friend. His name was Silas. They walked and walked, to tell people about Jesus.
One night, Paul had a dream. A man said, "Come! Help us!" So Paul and Silas got on a boat. They sailed far away, to a place called Macedonia.
There they met a woman. Her name was Lydia. She sold pretty purple cloth. Lydia listened to Paul. She listened very well. God opened her heart, like a little door. Lydia believed in Jesus. She was so happy! "Come stay in my house," she said.
What Does This Mean?
But not every day was happy. Some men got angry at Paul and Silas. Very angry. They grabbed them. They hit them, hard. Then they threw them into a dark prison. Paul and Silas hurt. Their backs hurt so much.
It was night. Very dark, in that prison. But listen, what is that sound? Singing! Paul and Silas were singing to God. Right there, in the dark, in the pain. The other prisoners heard them singing too.
The Common Thread
Then, suddenly, the ground began to shake! Rumble, rumble, rumble. The prison doors flew open, bang! The chains fell off, clink, clink.
The jailer woke up. He was so scared. "Don't hurt yourself!" Paul called out. "We are here!" The jailer ran to them, shaking. "What must I do?" he asked.
Paul said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus. You will be saved." Just like Lydia believed. Just like Paul told everyone, everywhere he went. God was helping people find Jesus. In a big house, and in a dark prison too.
For You
The jailer washed Paul's cuts, so gently. Then he gave them bread to eat. He was smiling now. His whole family was smiling. They all believed in Jesus that night.
Do you know what? God can open hearts. He opened Lydia's heart. He opened the jailer's heart. God can open your heart too, softly, like a little door. Even when you are scared, or it is dark, you can sing to God. Just like Paul did.

Dear God, Thank You for opening hearts, like a little door. Thank You for Lydia, and for the jailer too. When I am scared, help me remember, I can sing to You, even in the dark. Amen.
