Daniel 3

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

Once there was a king. His name was Nebuchadnezzar. He built a big, big statue. All gold. So tall, taller than your house.

The king said, "When the music plays, everyone bows down. Everyone bows to my gold statue."

Trumpets played. Drums banged. And all the people bowed down low. Their faces to the ground.

All the people, except three men. Their names were Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They did not bow. Not even a little bit. They stood up tall, because they only bowed to God.

Some men saw this. They ran to the king. "Those three men will not bow!"

What Does This Mean?

The king was angry. Very angry. His face turned red. He called the three men to come.

"Bow down," said the king, "or I will throw you into the fire. A big, hot fire."

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego looked at each other. Then they answered. "Our God can save us from the fire. But even if He does not, we still will not bow. Only to Him."

The king shouted. He told his men, "Make the fire seven times hotter!" The fire went up, up, up. Hot and orange and roaring. They tied up the three men and threw them in.

The Common Thread

Now watch. This is the best part.

The king looked into the fire. He jumped up from his seat. "Wait," he said. "I see four men in there! Walking around! And one of them shines, like he is from heaven."

God had sent someone. Someone to stand with them in the fire. God did not stop the fire from being hot. But He walked into it with them. That is what God does. He comes close, even in the scary places. Later He would send Jesus, to come right down into our world, to be close to us too.

The king called out, "Shadrach! Meshach! Abednego! Come out!"

They walked out. Not one hair was burned. Their clothes did not even smell like smoke. Everybody could see it. God had kept them safe.

For You

The king said, "There is no other God who can save like this."

You can talk to that same God. When you are scared of the dark, or scared of new things, you can whisper to Him. He hears you. He was with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fire. He is with you too.

Talk About It

Were you ever scared? Who was with you?

Why do you think the three men would not bow down, even though it was scary?

Praying Together

Dear God, Thank You for staying close in the fire. Stay close to me too. When I am scared, help me remember You are near. Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 11

Notice who says this line. Not the king, but the accusers, repeating his decree back to him: "whoever doesn't fall down and worship shall be cast into the middle of a burning fiery furnace." The threat is spoken before any fire touches anyone. That is how fear usually works on you too. The furnace does its loudest work while it is still only a word.

Insight Editorial on verse 16

They don't stall. They don't ask for time to pray about it. "Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter." No title, no flattery, just his name. The furnace didn't force a decision, it revealed one already made. What have you settled in your heart before the heat comes? That is what will answer for you.
