Deuteronomy 32

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

Listen. Moses is very old. He knows he will die soon. But first he wants to sing. A very long song, for all the people.

Moses stands there. Everyone is quiet. Then he begins.

"Listen, sky! Listen, earth! I am going to tell about God."

Moses sings about God. God is like a big rock. Strong. Solid. You can stand on Him. You will not fall.

Moses sings on. He sings about long ago. God found His people in the desert. It was empty there. Dry. Hot. But God saw them. God took care of them. He held them close, like your most precious thing.

Do you know what God is like? Moses says: like a big eagle. A big bird with strong wings. The mother eagle teaches her little ones to fly. And when they get scared, she flies underneath them. She catches them on her wings. She carries them.

That is how God carried His people.

God gave them good food too. Sweet honey. Warm bread. Milk. Butter. Everything they needed.

But then, oh, then something sad happens. The people forget God. They eat and eat. They get fat and lazy. They say, "We do not need God anymore." They bow down to other things. Made-up gods. Stones and statues.

God sees it. God is sad. And God is angry.

But wait. God does not stop loving His people. God says, "I am the only God. I heal. I help. I forgive."

Then Moses stops singing.

What Does This Mean?

Moses wants everyone to remember. Remember God. God is like a rock. God is like an eagle. God is a Father who takes care of you.

Do not forget Him. Never.

The Common Thread

The song says: God is a Rock. Solid. Safe.

Later, much later, Jesus comes. Jesus is also called the Rock. You can lean on Jesus. You can stand on Jesus. Jesus catches you, just like the eagle catches her little one on her wings.

God has always been like that. Then, and now.

For You

Do you know what is so nice? God is like that eagle for you too.

When you fall down, God is there. When you feel sad, God is there. When it is dark at night and you are a little scared, God is there. Like big, soft wings around you.

You do not have to be afraid. God is a Rock. God does not wobble. God does not go away.

And here is something else. At the end of his song, Moses goes up a mountain. All alone. God shows him a beautiful land. Moses looks and looks. Then Moses goes to sleep with God forever.

God took Moses home.

Talk About It

What do you think it feels like to sit on an eagle's wings? Soft, or strong, or both?

Where do you feel that God is close to you? In your bed? Outside? At church?

Praying Together

Dear God,

Thank You that You are like a Rock. Strong and safe. Thank You that You are like an eagle. You catch me. I do not want to forget You. Hold me tight, please.

Amen.

What others discovered

Insight Editorial on verse 26

I said that I would scatter them afar. I would make the memory of them to cease from among men." God says what He could have done, then tells us why He didn't: not because Israel improved, but because His name was at stake. Your place in His hands rests on who He is. That holds when you have nothing left to offer.

Insight Editorial on verse 24

I will send the teeth of animals on them, with the venom of vipers who glide in the dust." Hunger, burning heat, fangs, venom: Israel had met all of these in the wilderness, and every time God stood between them and harm. Here He simply steps aside. The terror is not that He invents new dangers, but that He lowers a shield we had stopped noticing. How much of your quiet safety today is His hand, still there?

Insight Editorial on verse 32

Their vine is of the vine of Sodom, of the fields of Gomorrah. Their grapes are poison grapes. Their clusters are bitter." A grape doesn't decide its own taste. It simply tells you what the roots have been drinking. So when bitterness surprises you in your own words, trace it back. What is your life growing out of?

Insight Editorial on verse 28

For they are a nation void of counsel. There is no understanding in them." Moses is singing this over Israel, God's own people. Not pagans. Not outsiders. The ones who saw the sea split.

Notice how possible it is to walk with God and still lose your wisdom. To have the story and miss the point. Are you letting Him counsel you, or just remembering when He used to?
