Genesis 9

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-5)

Bible

The Explanation

Noah stood outside the big boat. The rain was gone. The sun was warm on his face.

God looked at Noah. God looked at his sons too. And God smiled.

"Be fruitful," God said. "Have children. Fill the earth again."

The animals came out of the boat. Big ones, small ones, all of them. God gave them all to Noah, for food, for life, for a new beginning.

Then God said something very special. "I will make a promise," He said. "I will never send a flood like that again. Never, ever again."

What Does This Mean?

Noah listened close. What kind of promise was this?

God said, "Look up, Noah. Do you see the clouds?"

One day, rain came softly. Drip, drip, drip. And then, high in the sky, something appeared. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. A big, beautiful bow of colors.

"That is my rainbow," God said. "Every time you see it, remember. I promise. No more flood. Never again."

Noah looked up at the rainbow. It was so bright. So beautiful. He smiled.

The Common Thread

God keeps His promises. Always.

He promised Noah no more flood. And He kept it.

Later, God made more promises. He promised to send Someone to help His people. Someone kind. Someone who would take away all the bad things.

That Someone was Jesus.

Every time you see a rainbow, you can remember. God promises. And God always keeps His word.

Noah lived a long, long time after that. He planted a garden with grapes. He grew old. But God's promise stayed strong, even after Noah was gone.

For You

Do you ever see a rainbow? After the rain, look up.

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. So many colors.

When you see it, you can whisper, "Thank You, God. You keep Your promises."

God promised Noah. And He still keeps His promises today, for you too.

Talk About It

What colors do you see in a rainbow?

Can you think of a promise someone made to you? Did they keep it?

Praying Together

Dear God,

Thank You for rainbows.

Thank You for keeping Your promises.

Help me remember You, every time I see one.

Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 24

Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his youngest son had done to him." Noah wakes not to shame over his own drunkenness first, but to what was done to him. Isn't that us? Quick to feel the wound others caused, slow to see the vulnerability our own choices created. Both matter. Both need honesty before God.
